I read Lahiri's first book, Interpretation of Maladies, and liked it. Heard horrible reviews of The Namesake, but watched the movie. Her most recent book, Unaccustomed Earth goes back to her first as a collection of short stories. The first story alone is enough to reel you in. What I like about her stories is that they aren't all happy endings. I know, sounds cynical...but her stories are real. First and second generation desis certainly can relate to all the stories. My favorite are the last three s... Read More

The days that pass by me The nights that crawl up, The vastnesses that I see, The tightness that sneaks up, Do thoughts have an age? Do feelings need a hub? Am I a lament of my thoughts? Am I an idol I conjured up?

I recently saw this really great true story movie. Don't you love those? It's about this guy who is an editor for French elle living a very hedonistic life who has an accident of sorts and ends up almost completely paralyzed; the only thing that he can move are his eyelids and eyes. From this he decides to write a book about his life and the state that he is in, essentially a state between life and death. Mind you this is a true story and no one has really reported back from this kind of a place before - not... Read More

Is Islamic culture not amazing? Two aspects of Islamic culture are clothing and food. - Clothing - Take for instance the scarf that muslim women wear to cover their hair. The same scarf with minor changes is used by muslim women as far west as in America and Africa and as far east as in Indonesia and Malaysia. - Food - A form of biryani is cooked from Iran and Russian republics to Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Burma and Malaysia, Indonesia again. These common traits in Islamic cul... Read More

A husband was in big trouble when he forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife told him "Tomorrow there better be something in the driveway for me that goes zero to 200 in 2 seconds flat". The next morning the wife found a small package in the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Funeral arrangements for the husband have been set for Saturday!

June 24, 2008 Don't Blame the Saudis Gas Price Gouging By MIKE WHITNEY ?I've seen this bad movie before. It's the Enron movie, which hit the West Coast power-markets like a bomb because the federal government was asleep at the switch. Now it's happening again with oil prices." --Rep. Jay Inslee, D-WA There is no oil shortage, not yet at least. The reason oil has skyrocketed to nearly $140 per barrel is because of rampant speculation. The peak oil doom-sayers are simply confu... www.counterpunch.org June 27, 2008 SOS, Different Year What's a Voter to Do? By RON JACOBS In the good ol' USA, I'm considered a white guy. Despite my leftist/anarcho politics and my preference for news that isn't filtered through the capitalist media, I'm a white guy as far as polling demographics go. I've got friends who fear immigrants and blacks, wear their rednecks a little too proudly, and genuinely like Lynyrd Skynyrd because of the band's politics. Despi... Read More

From Billy Madison to Happy Gilmore to the Chanukah Song, the predecessor of the Superbad generation has effortlessly conquered the domain of slapstick comedy and inappropriate jokes. June 28 / 29, 2008 Exception to the Rule? Nader, Obama and White Talk By NIKOLAS KOZLOFF Ralph Nader, whose independent bid for the White House has received scant media attention, just got noticed. Weekend Edition June 28 / 29, 2008 CounterPunch Diary Guess What "Surprise" Republicans Yearn For By ALEXANDER COCKBURN Everybody knows it, but it took a tacky Republican operator to come right out and say it. Charlie Black, John McCain?s campaign adviser, recently let drop to Fortune magazine that another terrorist attack on U.S. soil would be a "big advantage" for the Republican presidential candidate. Of course McCain lost no time in distancing himself from Black?s remark, with the same b... Read More

news.bbc.co.uk Birthday party snub sparks debate An eight-year-old boy has sparked an unlikely outcry in Sweden after failing to invite two of his classmates to his birthday party. The boy's school says he has violated the children's rights and has complained to the Swedish Parliament. The school, in Lund, southern Sweden, argues that if invitations are handed out on school premises then it must ensure there is no discrimination. The boy's father has lodge... Read More
