has added a new journalCurrently doing some research on the above issue and reviewing my somewhat limited knowledge of the subject.
What is Hijab? As defined by the Quran and sunnah? What does it constitute and in what context is it required? What ayah?s of the Quran and which Hadith relate to this issue? When were these Ayah?s revealed? What issues were they addressing? Why are women required to dress in a certain way? Does a woman?s dress have to follow a certain cultural form (e.g. Saudi) or can a woman adapt her dress to suit the country that she?s in at that moment in time? What are the different cultural interpretations of hijab? How do the different schools of thought differ in their guidelines regarding Hijab?
I have had a few people say to me that covering one?s hair is not obligatory, could any one here please expand on that? Is covering of one?s hair nowadays regarded more as sign of being a Muslim (i.e. uniform) than an obligation for a woman in order to remain modest?
I?m looking for interpretations or literature/references that are across the board i.e. those that state that Hijab includes covering every aspect of a women?s body to those who talk about just lengthening their garments without the covering of their hair.
I would be grateful if you could provide references (links to websites, books, audio or video material). Thanks :)
