I think that joining or supporting lobby groups is fine. Even throwing support to the candidate who may be the lesser of 2 evils is fine. But, joining politcal parties that have in their platforms unconditional support of Israel, who support measures like the patriot act, etc. is problematic.

i was reading the Gulf News yesterday and there was this article on some arab dude who had some treatment called 'Hijama' and it was weird reading how he was justifying having the treatment because it was 'sunnah' *:

'Hijama comes from the Arabic word Hijam, or 'suck' and this method of treatment has been recommended by the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). According to one Hadith (Sayings of the Prophet): "If there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in the knife of the cupper, drinking honey, or cauterisation with fire, as appropriate to the cause of the illness, but I would not like to be cauterised." (Reported by Al Bukhaari, 10/139). '
