Start communicating
LongDistanceLuv
This Village is intended as advice for people considering a long distance relationship. The spread of the web across the world with email, and chat, means that people are meeting online, and causing an explosion of potential Long Distance Relationships.
I hope that this Village may also help people already in Long Distance Relationships, but I suppose if you've been in one for long, you already have a pretty good idea what it's all about. If you are such a person, and have advice you think should be useful for others please share your thoughts.

has added a new journalIn a long distance relationship, when are you "dating" someone - assuming all you have done thus far is communicate online and on the phone? Is "dating" dependent on having met face to face?

i think as often as possible. If money is no object... call every day and see each other every month or 2 months. If $ and time are issues, i think seeing each other every 3 months (for a week or so each time) and talking twice a week is okay.the more contact though, the closer you will get in a shorter period of time. (but too much contact is suffocating)

indeed, you should always meet the person (the man comes to see the woman) first to see if they have things in common "compatible" and then see if they want to get to know each other with intentions and purpose of potential marriage. emails and phone calls should be regular like 2 times a week or more often than that depending on the couple. however, you should see each other say like every 2 months or so...to see if the vibe and good chemistry and mutual liking for each other is still there, if both guy and girl..are committed to see each other every now and then...then that is a relationship (there is no substitute for meeting and seeing each other face to face as I agree with other ladies who have spoken before me).December 1, 2007 at 10:30am

I have a question: how often should two ppl who live long distance communicate with each other, in textx, chats, calls and meet each other, to say it's goin along well after the first meeting, and it has not been openly decided that you are in an official relationship yet?It is hard to tell when everyone has a different take or experience of how to tell if it's going well. Is it really based upon the feelin that one gets in your own situation? But good advice always help from situations where it has worked out as well as to know some red flags.

has added a new journalWhat makes a long distance relationship a more interesting option than a homegrown one.
Is it the allure of the exotic?
Do UK/ US/ eastern men/ women really come across as that much better than their local counterparts?
or are we all suffering from a bad case of 'all men/ women are horrible' and hoping for greener grass elsewhere without realising it..

Been in one before. Important issue with the distance is trust.Being far away as I was from this person, what made it fall apart was that she couldn't trust me. Felt I would be cheating on her or my parents would have arranged a marriage to someone else. (she was a non-Muslim to begin with and refused to convert if she did marry me)

Ah yes, the communication bonus.. the first time I heard this theory was in a Shania Twain interview (she married her producer after talking to him on the phone for weeks/ months.. met him much later)..the interviewer was arguing long distance relationships can be dodgy.. she disagreed and said, you can get to know so much about a person by what they have to say, it's a great way to find out who they really are
(i assume she meant.. a person who is being honest.. she hadn't met the mingers we have met..)
