Dear Alpie-
i think the idea of coming late is ok. but also (as a yoga and pilates additct) i just wanted to say that it is GREAT exersise- for the body AND mind, so try not to get too stressed out about the little things. One of the key points of yoga is to "clear the mind", not to stress over some statues.
an invocation is just a way of introducing your mind body and spirit to the activities that are about to take place.
It's like when we hear the Ad'han (call to prayer)- it gets your mind set in the right direction to worship God. so when yogi's do an invocation it's to get your mind set on the upcoming postures and mental clarity. kinda like a Pavalovian response.
Might i suggest that u can use the time for silent reflection, perhaps even give a small prayer to give thanks that u made it to class safe/ orpray for help to have the stamina to make it thu the class, or wheatever.
the same thing applies to corpse pose in closing- use the time to offer another prayer of thanks --which I do after every session of Hot Yoga!

agree...yoga is a good thing. You could always go to the library and get Yoga movies on your own....or even just talk to the instructor about the 'invocations'. Best of luck!
I thought about coming five minutes late. I don't actually think most people there even realize what the invocation is (including the instructor). The problem with the Y in this area is the size of the classes and the poor quality of instruction, I want to be able to get my postures correct before going out on my own. It can be a really beneficial workout if done correctly.
where are u taking these classes? classes at places like the Y or community centers would not have 'invocations'...it is simply an exercise to relax. If you don't want to participate--show up late!
You're on the right track sister. You answered your own question. "...attending the class at all is somehow participating in it in which case of course I cannot attend."
