The TRAFFICKING of children has become one of the biggest sources of revenue for gangs and syndicates all over the world. UNICEF believes the issue of child sexual abuse, including prostitution, pornography, and child trafficking in Europe (particularly the border areas between East & West) needs to be made a priority to combat the problem.
Prostitution is a death sentence for many children,
who become exposed to STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) & HIV/AIDS, which are rampant in the sex industries.
Eva Vanickova, author of the Third Medical Faculty of Charles University, compiled responses from 1,585 pupils from Cheb and Prague primary schools found
that the following:
>> 65% of children in Prague &
>> 75% of children in Cheb
knew that child prostitution existed.
The way in which child prostitution is viewed was surprising as follows:
18% of girls considered prostitution to be an opportunity to live a luxurious life.
24% of girls considered prostitution to be an opportunity for people without education to obtain education.
25% of boys considered prostitution to be an opportunity to obtain money for drugs.
95% of children in Cheb said they could envisage becoming involved in prostitution (in Prague 6%)
Almost 14% of children in Cheb had already been approached by an adult with an offer of sex for money (in Prague 10%).
Other findings included the following:
~Children living in certain streets see prostitution everyday.
~There is a lack of sex education at school. Most children have no idea how to respond in a risky situation, such as being approached by a sex tourist.
~Children do not know whom to contact if such a situation arises.
~Children do not have the opportunity to communicate openly on the topic of prostitution, many teachers refuse to talk about the subject.
~"Hookers and pimps" is a common children's game in the parks.
Many parents are worried about their children's security and therefore do not allow them to go out and play in the afternoon.
