Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah swt be pleased with him) said: 'A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, his family & companions) and asked him: "Please tell me of something that I can do so that both Allah as well as people will love me." The Prophet (pbuh) said: "Do not be attached to this world and Allah will love you and do not go after other people's possessions (desire what is in other people's hands) and they will love you'.
