We live in dangerous times...
IM Currently in Karachi, Recently one of I lost around 4000 Rs and mobile phone. However, we must not classify Karachi as a unique city where this happens. It is common to get robbed and mugged almost all over the world.
Let us hope and pray that Karachi becomes the same safe city it used to be as I remember in my childhood when boundary walls were low and gates were see through without any sheets.

Well, on a more serious note, the mid-80s saw Karachi becoming a much more dangerous place than it was previously. The drug trade increased, fireams started to come in more freely as a result of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, etc. etc.
But yes, there's always a tendency to view the past through rose-tinted spectacles. Something to guard against.
Please refer to my seminal work, "A History of Dacoity in Karachi: From the Polyester-ridden '70s to the Pajero-heavy '90s", available from all good bookstores.
P.S. If you're lucky, you might still be able to pick up the second copy ever printed.
