Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Dr. Paul Larudee has a Ph.D. in linguistics from Georgetown University and spent 14 years in Arab countries as a student, teacher, training administrator, government advisor and Fulbright-Hays exchange lecturer. He has visited Palestine many times since 1965, including four times with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement that nonviolently resists Israeli human rights violations. Paul was one of seven ISM volunteers wounded by Israeli gunfire in April, 2002. In 2006, he was held in Israeli detention for two weeks while seeking to enter the country. He participated in nonviolent resistance to the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He is one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement.
Paul speaks of justice and equitable solutions for all who consider Palestine their home, without discrimination on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity. He offers new perspectives, challenges established viewpoints and presents innovative ideas for making progress toward a just resolution of issues.

For past several years, local Muslim community leaders have been striving to establish a council to promote coordination and cooperation among mosques and Muslim non-profit organizations through collective consultation. Shura is an Arabic word for consultation which is rooted in the central idea that people are equal in their rights and responsibilities.
Purpose: Achieving Muslim non-profit unity and excellence through cooperation and coordination
Registration: $5 per person
Expected Audience: Imams, directors of Masajid and Muslim non-profits and community members in general.

The event will include presentations by members of the existing councils, a Dinner, presentations by speakers, and a resolution to establish the council.
Northern California Islamic Council is a peer-to-peer network of advice and support for Muslim non-profits with an aim to provide a united Muslim voice to the community at large. We hope that the non-binding consultation among Muslim non-profit organizations will help build trust and confidence in the light of Qur'anic verse, "?those who conduct their affairs by counsel" (43:38)
Primary goals and objectives of the council are to:
? Promote collaboration and cooperation among Muslim non-profits
? Help build consensus on issues of common interests and concerns
? Improve leadership communication and management skills
? Strengthen communities through education, empowerment and mobilization
The Mosques and Muslim organizations in Northern California serve more than half a million Muslims and the Northern California Islamic Council aspires to leverage the collective wisdom of a truly representative body with clergy and lay leaders from a very diverse Muslim community. Such a successful model already exists in the Shura Council of Southern California for over a decade. You are invited to participate and witness this historic event.

Program: Showing of Michael Wolfe's Documentary on Hajj and discussion of his book One Thousand Roads to Mecca (1997) followed by Q& A Session. Ticket: $10 ($5 Students)
Michael Wolfe is a poet, author, and the President and Executive Producer of Unity Productions Foundation. He is also a frequent lecturer on Islamic issues at universities across the United States including Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, SUNY Buffalo, and Princeton. He holds a degree in Classics from Wesleyan University. In April 1997, Wolfe hosted a televised account of the Hajj from Mecca for "Nightline" on ABC. The program was nominated for Peabody, Emmy, George Polk, and National Press Club Awards.
In 1999, Wolfe helped found an educational media foundation focused on promoting peace through the media, Unity Productions Foundation (UPF). In 2002, UPF produced its first full-length film, called Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, a two-hour television documentary on the life and times of the Prophet Muhammad. The film, which Wolfe co-created, co-produced, and co-executive edited, received a national broadcast on PBS and subsequent international broadcasts on National Geographic International. It was awarded a Cine Special Jury Award for Best Professional Documentary in its category of People and Places.
Currently, Wolfe is co-producing two new films set for release in 2007. The first is entitled Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain and is set for a national PBS broadcast on Aug. 22, 2007. Prince Among Slaves is the true story of an African prince enslaved in antebellum Mississippi struggling to regain his freedom.

Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Dr. Paul Larudee has a Ph.D. in linguistics from Georgetown University and spent 14 years in Arab countries as a student, teacher, training administrator, government advisor and Fulbright-Hays exchange lecturer. He has visited Palestine many times since 1965, including four times with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement that nonviolently resists Israeli human rights violations. Paul was one of seven ISM volunteers wounded by Israeli gunfire in April, 2002. In 2006, he was held in Israeli detention for two weeks while seeking to enter the country. He participated in nonviolent resistance to the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He is one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement.
Paul speaks of justice and equitable solutions for all who consider Palestine their home, without discrimination on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity. He offers new perspectives, challenges established viewpoints and presents innovative ideas for making progress toward a just resolution of issues.

For past several years, local Muslim community leaders have been striving to establish a council to promote coordination and cooperation among mosques and Muslim non-profit organizations through collective consultation. Shura is an Arabic word for consultation which is rooted in the central idea that people are equal in their rights and responsibilities.
Purpose: Achieving Muslim non-profit unity and excellence through cooperation and coordination
Registration: $5 per person
Expected Audience: Imams, directors of Masajid and Muslim non-profits and community members in general.

Northern California Islamic Council is a peer-to-peer network of advice and support for Muslim non-profits with an aim to provide a united Muslim voice to the community at large. We hope that the non-binding consultation among Muslim non-profit organizations will help build trust and confidence in the light of Qur'anic verse, "?those who conduct their affairs by counsel" (43:38)
Primary goals and objectives of the council are to:
? Promote collaboration and cooperation among Muslim non-profits
? Help build consensus on issues of common interests and concerns
? Improve leadership communication and management skills
? Strengthen communities through education, empowerment and mobilization
The Mosques and Muslim organizations in Northern California serve more than half a million Muslims and the Northern California Islamic Council aspires to leverage the collective wisdom of a truly representative body with clergy and lay leaders from a very diverse Muslim community. Such a successful model already exists in the Shura Council of Southern California for over a decade. You are invited to participate and witness this historic event.

Program: Showing of Michael Wolfe's Documentary on Hajj and discussion of his book One Thousand Roads to Mecca (1997) followed by Q& A Session. Ticket: $10 ($5 Students)
Michael Wolfe is a poet, author, and the President and Executive Producer of Unity Productions Foundation. He is also a frequent lecturer on Islamic issues at universities across the United States including Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, SUNY Buffalo, and Princeton. He holds a degree in Classics from Wesleyan University. In April 1997, Wolfe hosted a televised account of the Hajj from Mecca for "Nightline" on ABC. The program was nominated for Peabody, Emmy, George Polk, and National Press Club Awards.
In 1999, Wolfe helped found an educational media foundation focused on promoting peace through the media, Unity Productions Foundation (UPF). In 2002, UPF produced its first full-length film, called Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, a two-hour television documentary on the life and times of the Prophet Muhammad. The film, which Wolfe co-created, co-produced, and co-executive edited, received a national broadcast on PBS and subsequent international broadcasts on National Geographic International. It was awarded a Cine Special Jury Award for Best Professional Documentary in its category of People and Places.
Currently, Wolfe is co-producing two new films set for release in 2007. The first is entitled Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain and is set for a national PBS broadcast on Aug. 22, 2007. Prince Among Slaves is the true story of an African prince enslaved in antebellum Mississippi struggling to regain his freedom.
