Asalaam Alaikum and Greetings,
I'm back in California! My father is doing much better now and is starting to get back to a somewhat normal routine. The most critical thing I learned out of this was the importance of immediate and sustained Physical Therapy and exercises to relearn the use of various muscles. I have been very blessed to have the support of my employer during this time as well as the many friends and family that have helped by sending their prayers, e-mails, duas & words of encouragement and support.
While back in the Greater Maryland, D.C., Virginia area I was also able to meet some great people and attend some very fun and interesting events including:
www.MakeChaiNotWar.com - New comics & new material from existing comics made this for a very fun and entertaining night. They wish to take this on the road and have some other North American & European locales booked. Hit them up if you want them to come to the Bay Area.
www.pgmamd.org - Held a Community Eid Picnic as well as sign ups for a regional Muslim Youth Soccer League (MYSL). This league has attracted over 200 children and teens from 5-7 regional Mosques/Masjids in the Greater Maryland Area. I was able to talk to Coach Omar with PGMA who was very positive about the League and the participation and support that it has gotten from the children, parents and the community. I am not aware of such a league in the Bay Area so perhaps this could be something to consider for our youth here.
www.mccmd.org - Attended Eid Prayers there...nothing much to report on there, but there school appears to be going well and they are embarking on another $1 million expansion for their property. Also, I believe, home to the only Muslim run permanent free clinic in Maryland amhp.us .
www.mlcmd.org - Makkah Learning Center - Is assembling books to open up a library that the entire community will be able to check out books from as well as embarking on a multi-year plan to develop a university style institution for higher learning.
www.facebook.com - Held a very nice Eid Gathering with people that were interested in getting involved with education, interfaith, outreach and community service activities. churcheswithoutboundaries.org - Held an Interfaith Festival that provided information on religious services in the Greater Annapolis area. They also had participation from the Islamic Society of Annapolis.
www.alhuda.org - Iftar & Gatherings @ Al Huda College Park, MD - Great community gatherings. As a newcomer I was welcomed with smiles and open arms. One interesting note posted near the shoe area (for which they had adequate shelving): ANY SHOES NOT PLACED ON SHELVES WILL BE THROWN AWAY. Guess how many shoes I saw scattered on the floor the evening that I went there: 0. During the weekend Ramadan iftars they would have dedicated volunteers stand outside by themselves for the entire evening simply to direct traffic & parking (they were fed and were relieved when needed). I was touched by the friendliness, sincerity & dedication that all the volunteers showed at this particular center.
www.dceid.org - The MD/DC/VA area used to have consolidated Eid prayers in years past, but alas, each community has decided to do it on their own. There are benefits and drawbacks with doing it either way, but it is interesting to see how another community develops as well.
www.muslimlinkpaper.com - Muslim Link newspaper was a good resource for news & updates within the greater DC/MD/VA area.

AtifsList is now on Facebook. If you ever wanted to go to an event but did not know who else was going, then AtifsList & Facebook might be able to help. Plot: The story involves three estranged brothers, Francis, Peter and Jack (played by Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman), who take a train ride through India after the death of their father. The fictional long-distance train "Darjeeling Limited", apparently named after the short narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, provides the backdrop for the brothers trying to grow closer together. The film also stars Waris Ahluwalia, Amara Karan, Barbet Schroeder and Anjelica Huston, with Natalie Portman and Bill Murray in cameo roles.
The Darjeeling Limited had its world premiere on September 3, 2007 at the Venice Film Festival, where it was in competition for the Golden Lion. The film's North American premiere was on September 28, 2007 at the 45th annual New York Film Festival, where it was the opening film. It then opened in a limited commercial release in North America on October 5, 2007. The film is set for nationwide release in the U.S. on October 26, 2007.

Abstract: It is common knowledge that Muslims ruled the Iberian Peninsula for 700 years. But not many people know of what that legacy means in Spain today. Through a slide presentation, Br. Farhan will walk us through the remains of Andalusia, as well as a taste of Islam in Spain today. Through this visual history, we will get a sense for how Islam thrived and then declined there.
TOPIC-2: Allama Iqbal's Masjid-e-Qortoba
Speaker: Br. Ahsan Syed
Abstract: The great Urdu poet Allama Iqbal was a force for spiritual and political change a century ago. His use of language can only be described as genius in this regard. One of his greatest poems was "Masjid-e-Qortoba", an emotional poem about the Grand Mosque of Cordoba, once the capital of Muslim Spain. Though the poem cannot be done justice in one setting, Br. Ahsan will give us a taste for the way in which Iqbal communicated his love for the ummah, its architecture and its ideas.

Neighborhood Walks: The most critical portion of the race is neighborhood walks. I will be walking every evening from now until the election introducing myself and handing folks campaign materials. Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Plot: The story involves three estranged brothers, Francis, Peter and Jack (played by Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman), who take a train ride through India after the death of their father. The fictional long-distance train "Darjeeling Limited", apparently named after the short narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, provides the backdrop for the brothers trying to grow closer together. The film also stars Waris Ahluwalia, Amara Karan, Barbet Schroeder and Anjelica Huston, with Natalie Portman and Bill Murray in cameo roles.
The Darjeeling Limited had its world premiere on September 3, 2007 at the Venice Film Festival, where it was in competition for the Golden Lion. The film's North American premiere was on September 28, 2007 at the 45th annual New York Film Festival, where it was the opening film. It then opened in a limited commercial release in North America on October 5, 2007. The film is set for nationwide release in the U.S. on October 26, 2007.

Abstract: It is common knowledge that Muslims ruled the Iberian Peninsula for 700 years. But not many people know of what that legacy means in Spain today. Through a slide presentation, Br. Farhan will walk us through the remains of Andalusia, as well as a taste of Islam in Spain today. Through this visual history, we will get a sense for how Islam thrived and then declined there.
TOPIC-2: Allama Iqbal's Masjid-e-Qortoba

Abstract: The great Urdu poet Allama Iqbal was a force for spiritual and political change a century ago. His use of language can only be described as genius in this regard. One of his greatest poems was "Masjid-e-Qortoba", an emotional poem about the Grand Mosque of Cordoba, once the capital of Muslim Spain. Though the poem cannot be done justice in one setting, Br. Ahsan will give us a taste for the way in which Iqbal communicated his love for the ummah, its architecture and its ideas.

Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.
