Film Night in the Park is San Francisco's premiere outdoor film series. Eight film night screenings in 2007 were attended by over 15,000 film-goers with over 7,000 attending the July screening of 16 CANDLES in Dolores Park. Over 50,000 people have attended Film Night in San Francisco since 2003. Films are presented free of charge on a giant outdoor screen in beautiful park settings. As part of the Interfaith Witness for Peace in the Middle East, The Middle East Peace Program, has organized an exciting series of workshops in May. People of all faiths are asked to share their deeper thoughts, share stories and find common ground in unifying against racism in our society. The goal for attendees is to relate personally to the stories they hear, understand the context that exacerbates these specific bigotries, and to act from their own faith perspective to end the problem.

Why address Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism together?
It is important to address these forms of racism together, because their roots are the same: fear, ignorance, and misinformation. Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith traditions share similar teachings on how we are to treat our neighbors. However, the reality of our historical experiences has left many gaping wounds. In addition, current events have deepened the potential for stereotypes, upon which racism thrives. Hearing each other's stories of both pain and caring can help nurture healing and address the ways in which racism inhibits our ability to fulfill the vision of the prophets to strive for justice, and live in peace. Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry. Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Our monthly opportunity to volunteer comes again on Saturday, May 17, when we will help feed abused children at the Edgewood Breakfast Club, 1801 Vicente Street (at 29th Avenue) in San Francisco's Sunset district. Last time (March) we did this one, many of you told me how much you enjoyed serving the children, so I am trying to make it one of our 'regulars.' The volunteer session begins at 8:30 am and ends at approximately 11:30 am. Won't you join us? Please email me this week if you are interested in joining together to prepare and feed these kids a nice breakfast on a Saturday morning, May 17th.

Lecture Series by Dr. Ayoub at ICCNC. Dr. Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub, Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at Temple University has written a number of books in English and Arabic on Islam and interreligious dialogue, including Redemptive Suffering in Islam and The Qur'an and Its Interpreters (two volumes to date). Ayoub is editorial consultant for The Muslim World Journal, chief editor of Qur'an Commentary al-Mizan, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Islam and Christian Muslim Relations. He earned his MA in religious thought from the University of Pennsylvania and his PhD in the history of religion from Harvard. Program will include lecture and Q& A in English. A workshop for community members, volunteers and employees who provide services and support to those affected by domestic violence and for those interested in learning more about building more peaceful communities. A Workshop for Faith Leaders and Domestic Violence Prevention Advocates and Community Members who want to build more peaceful communities. SEMAH Inc, a Muslim and Interfaith organization working to build more peaceful communities, will be co-presenting another FIVFF (Faith in Violence Free Families) on May 28, 2008. We have facilitated and co-presented the workshops since our inception in 2005. We are also part of the Inter-faith advisory board that has provided input and assistance with development of the curriculum. FIVFF is a project of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Epidemiology and Prevention for Injury Control (EPIC) Branch. The program is administered by Transforming Communities: Technical Assitance, Training and Resource Center (TC-TAT) and co-presented by SEMAH in our area. Although the workshops are geared towards domestic violence issues, many of the principles and tools to address this social scourge is applicable in other areas as well. For example, we have a very useful outline for developing a community plan to address other social service needs. Participants will receive an official Certificate of Completion, signed by the California Department of Public Health. Seven MFT/LCSW/RN contact Hours of continuing Education also available. We hope you will join us on May 28th in Fremont, CA to learn about how you too can contribute towards improvement of our community. We also work with groups to do on-site workshops for your organization at at time and day that may be more convenient. We look forward to working with you. Hamid Mavani is Assistant Professor of Religion at the Claremont Graduate University. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from McGill University's Institute of Islamic Studies. Professor Mavani has been active at the academic and community level in promoting interfaith dialogue, inter- and intra-Muslim dialogue, religious pluralism, civil society, democratic governance, reform in the Islamic legal tradition, gender and religion, and environmental ethics. Jobrani was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he caught the acting bug after portraying the lead in his eighth grade production of "Li'l Abner." He studied theater throughout high school, then went on to earn a BA in Political Science and Italian at UC Berkeley. In the fall of 1994, while beginning a Ph.D. program in Political Science at UCLA, he visited the university's prestigious theater program and was immediately hooked back on acting.

Dr. Shukor will be talking about his personal experiences as a Muslim in the space & also about the importance for Muslims to pay attention to science & discovery to reclaim our legacy. This will be an inspiration for many of our young men & women while listening to his intriguing stories & experiences.
Muslim Astronaut from Malaysia: From among more than a billion Muslims, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor earned the distinction of being one of only two Muslim Astronauts, ever to travel into the space. Flying aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft during Ramadan (Oct 10 - 21, 2007) he not only made Malaysians, but all Muslims proud. In addition to his mission including task of conducting various scientific experiments, he found answers to the issues of ablution, praying, fasting and halal diet as an Astronaut in space. Dr. Sheikh is an orthopedic surgeon by profession. Famous Quotes by Dr. Sheikh: "The best fast ever was in space." "I have done my soul-searching for many many years by going to Afghanistan in 2002 after the war and Cambodia in 2003 for humanitarian aid under MERCY. I have always felt some emptiness inside not knowing what it was. But I have found my inner soul in space. I felt somehow complete while I was in space."

Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry. Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Our monthly opportunity to volunteer comes again on Saturday, May 17, when we will help feed abused children at the Edgewood Breakfast Club, 1801 Vicente Street (at 29th Avenue) in San Francisco's Sunset district. Last time (March) we did this one, many of you told me how much you enjoyed serving the children, so I am trying to make it one of our 'regulars.' The volunteer session begins at 8:30 am and ends at approximately 11:30 am. Won't you join us? Please email me this week if you are interested in joining together to prepare and feed these kids a nice breakfast on a Saturday morning, May 17th.

Lecture Series by Dr. Ayoub at ICCNC. Dr. Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub, Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at Temple University has written a number of books in English and Arabic on Islam and interreligious dialogue, including Redemptive Suffering in Islam and The Qur'an and Its Interpreters (two volumes to date). Ayoub is editorial consultant for The Muslim World Journal, chief editor of Qur'an Commentary al-Mizan, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Islam and Christian Muslim Relations. He earned his MA in religious thought from the University of Pennsylvania and his PhD in the history of religion from Harvard. Program will include lecture and Q& A in English. A workshop for community members, volunteers and employees who provide services and support to those affected by domestic violence and for those interested in learning more about building more peaceful communities. A Workshop for Faith Leaders and Domestic Violence Prevention Advocates and Community Members who want to build more peaceful communities. SEMAH Inc, a Muslim and Interfaith organization working to build more peaceful communities, will be co-presenting another FIVFF (Faith in Violence Free Families) on May 28, 2008. We have facilitated and co-presented the workshops since our inception in 2005. We are also part of the Inter-faith advisory board that has provided input and assistance with development of the curriculum. FIVFF is a project of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Epidemiology and Prevention for Injury Control (EPIC) Branch. The program is administered by Transforming Communities: Technical Assitance, Training and Resource Center (TC-TAT) and co-presented by SEMAH in our area. Although the workshops are geared towards domestic violence issues, many of the principles and tools to address this social scourge is applicable in other areas as well. For example, we have a very useful outline for developing a community plan to address other social service needs. Participants will receive an official Certificate of Completion, signed by the California Department of Public Health. Seven MFT/LCSW/RN contact Hours of continuing Education also available. We hope you will join us on May 28th in Fremont, CA to learn about how you too can contribute towards improvement of our community. We also work with groups to do on-site workshops for your organization at at time and day that may be more convenient. We look forward to working with you. His sketch comedy performances at the ACME Theater in Los Angeles were hailed as "devilishly funny" and "extraordinary" by LA Weekly. Jobrani was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he caught the acting bug after portraying the lead in his eighth grade production of "Li'l Abner." He studied theater throughout high school, then went on to earn a BA in Political Science and Italian at UC Berkeley. In the fall of 1994, while beginning a Ph.D. program in Political Science at UCLA, he visited the university's prestigious theater program and was immediately hooked back on acting.

MCA - Muslim Astronaut Visiting Bay Area

Dr. Shukor will be talking about his personal experiences as a Muslim in the space & also about the importance for Muslims to pay attention to science & discovery to reclaim our legacy. This will be an inspiration for many of our young men & women while listening to his intriguing stories & experiences.
Muslim Astronaut from Malaysia: From among more than a billion Muslims, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor earned the distinction of being one of only two Muslim Astronauts, ever to travel into the space. Flying aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft during Ramadan (Oct 10 - 21, 2007) he not only made Malaysians, but all Muslims proud. In addition to his mission including task of conducting various scientific experiments, he found answers to the issues of ablution, praying, fasting and halal diet as an Astronaut in space. Dr. Sheikh is an orthopedic surgeon by profession. Famous Quotes by Dr. Sheikh: "The best fast ever was in space." "I have done my soul-searching for many many years by going to Afghanistan in 2002 after the war and Cambodia in 2003 for humanitarian aid under MERCY. I have always felt some emptiness inside not knowing what it was. But I have found my inner soul in space. I felt somehow complete while I was in space."
