Lecture Series by Dr. Ayoub at ICCNC. Dr. Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub, Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at Temple University has written a number of books in English and Arabic on Islam and interreligious dialogue, including Redemptive Suffering in Islam and The Qur'an and Its Interpreters (two volumes to date). Ayoub is editorial consultant for The Muslim World Journal, chief editor of Qur'an Commentary al-Mizan, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Islam and Christian Muslim Relations. He earned his MA in religious thought from the University of Pennsylvania and his PhD in the history of religion from Harvard. Program will include lecture and Q& A in English. Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry. Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Basant is a festival celebrating the arrival of spring and traditionally celebrated in the agricultural areas of Pakistan. Basant, also know as Jashn-e-Bharan, has recently gathered broad appeal. The signature attractions of this event are colorful kites and kite fighting competitions. Participants generally wear spring colored clothing (yellows, reds and oranges) to join nature's usual excitement for the coming of the spring season: colorful flowers blooming, trees getting their green leaves back and birds migrating back to the area singing their beautiful songs. Vendor booths, traditional Lahori food booths, booths with the special dishes of this day, live traditional South Asian music, ice cones and other fun foods for kids, raffles, games, kite flying competitions for the youth and young at heart and much more. But he is not uncaring and, in his idiosyncratic way, comes to assume his parental responsibilities in the end. In his first feature, director Liew Seng Tat again exhibits the quirky humor that marked his short films, while using the longer format to develop his talent for observation. Building on the basic contrasts in multiracial Malaysian society, Liew carefully distinguishes Ayu?s warm and loving household from the Li family?s barren lives. We first meet Leila as she appears to most?the sultry voice on her late-night radio program, a tell-all call-in show called Night Secrets. Youssef, a loyal listener, is an anesthetist whose respectable position belies a prurient fascination with other people?s lives and a penchant for sleeping in his car. Both of them attractive, poised and successful, they nonetheless remain rootless, secretly afraid to establish themselves in the world of social relations beyond those safely circumscribed by their jobs. Visually and dramatically, Nasrallah plays on modernity?s obsession with masks and surfaces. Actors in secondary roles even break character to impart insights into protagonists who verbally give little away. We see Leila reflected in or caught behind surfaces that betray her insubstantial life?reduced to her career, a voice on the air, she moves ghostlike through the dramas unfolding around her. One actor/character imagines Youssef as a vampire (and Nasrallah?s cheeky cut to Youssef sucking a thorn-pricked finger is a pointed visual joke). Youssef?s stony expression, wandering nocturnal life and especially his voyeurism?a ceaseless subsistence off the emotional lives of others?mark him out as unnatural, hovering like his anesthetized patients somewhere between life and death. In Japanese, taiko literally means "drum," though the term has also come to refer to the art of Japanese drumming, also known as kumi-daiko. Taiko has been a part of the Japanese culture for centuries. Stanford Taiko is a collegiate performing ensemble devoted to bringing the awareness of taiko to the greater community. Composed of fifteen to twenty Stanford students, it is an entirely student run group under the guidance of the Department of Music and faculty advisors Steve Sano and Linda Uyechi.

Muslim Astronaut from Malaysia: From among more than a billion Muslims, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor earned the distinction of being one of only two Muslim Astronauts, ever to travel into the space. Flying aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft during Ramadan (Oct 10 - 21, 2007) he not only made Malaysians, but all Muslims proud. In addition to his mission including task of conducting various scientific experiments, he found answers to the issues of ablution, praying, fasting and halal diet as an Astronaut in space. Dr. Sheikh is an orthopedic surgeon by profession. Famous Quotes by Dr. Sheikh: "The best fast ever was in space." Kosher-cooking Muslims and Koran-reading Jews typify the surprising culture clashes that complicate and enliven the contemporary France of Philippe Faucon?s exquisitely observed drama. Fiercely independent S?lima, a dedicated Arab nurse, takes a job caring for sharp-tongued, wheelchair-bound widow Esther, whose Jewish upbringing in Algeria and adulthood in multicultural France have hardened her suspicions of those outside the tribe. Sizing up Esther as a tough cookie requiring more attention than she herself can offer, S?lima appeals to her unusually open-minded mother, Halima, to assist with daycare. Thrown together out of mutual need?Esther craves home-cooked meals and a peer to put up with her complaints, while Halima can use the extra cash to fund her long-planned pilgrimage to Mecca?the pair overcomes personal and political differences to form an unlikely bond. Faucon traces their complex relationship with a light directorial touch, deftly avoiding what might otherwise have been a pedantic polemic pitting religious fundamentalism against secular freedom. His approach, like that of his leading ladies, is thoughtful and even-handed, as in a memorable scene in which a group of veiled women gaze with a mixture of disapproval and envy at topless sunbathers. Esther and Halima ultimately bring out the best in one another; their mutual admiration, like Faucon?s film, puts a fresh spin on that confounding law of physics and friendships: opposites attract.

EVENT SUMMARY: An interesting perspective and an interesting film on how two mothers of differing paths come to meet, interact and learn how to accept and live with each other's cultures and backgrounds.

On Saturday, April 26, 2008 PACSI is hosting its inaugural fundraiser. Join PACSI for an exciting evening with Pakistani authors Sara Suleri of Meatless Days and Boys Will Be Boys, and Bapsi Sidhwa of American Brat, Pakistani Bride, the Crow Eaters, and many other classics.
