Chris Hedges is a former foreign correspondent for 15 years. He was on staff at The New York Times and was a member of the team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for the paper's coverage of global terrorism. He is the author of ?American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America. Dr. Hatem Bazian is a senior lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, and an adjunct professor at Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. Speaker: Prof. M. Shahid Alam - Why did the United States choose to frame its new global posture after 9-11 as a 'global war on terrorism?' At first sight, this does not make sense, since terrorism is a tactic not an ideology. The speaker will explain why a war on terrorism is a very useful tool for mobilizing domestic support for achieving the neoconservative goal of making America's unipolar moment irreversible through restriction of liberties at home and wars of aggression aimed primarily at the Middle East. This goal coincided with -- and drew strength from -- the Zionist agenda in the Middle East and also the theologically motivated support of America's Christian right for Israeli expansionism.
About Speaker - M. Shahid Alam is a professor of economics at Northeastern University, Boston. His writings have appeared in leading economic journals, including Economic Development and Cultural Change, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, American Economic Review, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Studies in Contemporary Islam and Kyklos; in popular newspapers and web sites including Dissident Voice.org, Counterpunch, Al Ahram, Commondreams.org, Dawn, Holiday, Asia Times, Scoop, and Outlook India; in literary journals, including Chicago Review, Marlboro Review and Beloit Poetry Journal. He has published many books including Poverty from the Wealth of Nations (Macmillan, 2000), Governments and Markets in Economic Development Strategies (Praeger: 1989), and Is There An Islamic Problem (Kuala Lumpur: The Other Press, 2004). Many of Alam's articles have come under harsh criticism for his strong stances against Israel and America's foreign policy. EVENT SUMMARY (From CAIR National Newsletter): (SANTA CLARA, CA, 3/29/07) - On Saturday, March 24, the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) held its first Youth Leadership Workshop of 2007, titled "Introduction to Politics," at the Muslim Community Association (MCA). The workshop began with an interactive Politics 101 and was followed by a Q& A session, during which students cleared any concepts and voiced concerns about political issues. As part of the practical aspect of the workshop, the youth were then divided into four groups (Republican, Democratic, Green and Undecided) and asked to prepare a short speech as part of a mock presidential campaign. The Undecided group was then asked to vote based on presentations given by the three parties. The program concluded with a screening and discussion of the NBC Series "The West Wing," illustrating a day in the life of three presidential candidates, specifically highlighting their ethical dilemmas. Throughout the workshop, students expressed interest and knowledge of politics, leading discussions on issues such as healthcare, immigration and foreign policy. "We are very pleased with the success of the workshop," said Shazia Jafri, CAIR-SFBA Communications Coordinator. "The level of interest and interaction among students is indicative of the fact that Muslim youth are eager to partake in political, social and civic activism." CAIR-SFBA initiated the Youth Leadership Workshops in 2006 to introduce various public service fields to the youth, thus broadening their horizons and empowering them as future leaders of their communities. The next workshop on media, titled "Framing the Message," will be held on Saturday, May 12, at the South Bay Islamic Association (SBIA). Over $50,000 out of a total needed $250,000 was raised that evening. Nasheed Group Noor www.Noorification.com came up from Southern California to share their talents with the audience.

Speaker: Prof. M. Shahid Alam - Why did the United States choose to frame its new global posture after 9-11 as a 'global war on terrorism?' At first sight, this does not make sense, since terrorism is a tactic not an ideology. The speaker will explain why a war on terrorism is a very useful tool for mobilizing domestic support for achieving the neoconservative goal of making America's unipolar moment irreversible through restriction of liberties at home and wars of aggression aimed primarily at the Middle East. This goal coincided with -- and drew strength from -- the Zionist agenda in the Middle East and also the theologically motivated support of America's Christian right for Israeli expansionism.
About Speaker - M. Shahid Alam is a professor of economics at Northeastern University, Boston. His writings have appeared in leading economic journals, including Economic Development and Cultural Change, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, American Economic Review, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Studies in Contemporary Islam and Kyklos; in popular newspapers and web sites including Dissident Voice.org, Counterpunch, Al Ahram, Commondreams.org, Dawn, Holiday, Asia Times, Scoop, and Outlook India; in literary journals, including Chicago Review, Marlboro Review and Beloit Poetry Journal. EVENT SUMMARY (From CAIR National Newsletter): (SANTA CLARA, CA, 3/29/07) - On Saturday, March 24, the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) held its first Youth Leadership Workshop of 2007, titled "Introduction to Politics," at the Muslim Community Association (MCA). The workshop began with an interactive Politics 101 and was followed by a Q& A session, during which students cleared any concepts and voiced concerns about political issues. As part of the practical aspect of the workshop, the youth were then divided into four groups (Republican, Democratic, Green and Undecided) and asked to prepare a short speech as part of a mock presidential campaign. The Undecided group was then asked to vote based on presentations given by the three parties. The program concluded with a screening and discussion of the NBC Series "The West Wing," illustrating a day in the life of three presidential candidates, specifically highlighting their ethical dilemmas. Throughout the workshop, students expressed interest and knowledge of politics, leading discussions on issues such as healthcare, immigration and foreign policy. "We are very pleased with the success of the workshop," said Shazia Jafri, CAIR-SFBA Communications Coordinator. "The level of interest and interaction among students is indicative of the fact that Muslim youth are eager to partake in political, social and civic activism." CAIR-SFBA initiated the Youth Leadership Workshops in 2006 to introduce various public service fields to the youth, thus broadening their horizons and empowering them as future leaders of their communities. The next workshop on media, titled "Framing the Message," will be held on Saturday, May 12, at the South Bay Islamic Association (SBIA).
