American Muslims for Palestine presents an evening discussion about Christian Zionism with Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Chris Hedges and Dr. Hatem Bazian. Chris Hedges is a former foreign correspondent for 15 years. He was on staff at The New York Times and was a member of the team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for the paper's coverage of global terrorism. He is the author of ?American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America. Dr. Hatem Bazian is a senior lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, and an adjunct professor at Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He teaches courses on Islamic Law and Society, Islam in America, Religious Studies, and Arabic language. Admission: $10.

Speaker: Prof. M. Shahid Alam - Why did the United States choose to frame its new global posture after 9-11 as a 'global war on terrorism?' At first sight, this does not make sense, since terrorism is a tactic not an ideology. The speaker will explain why a war on terrorism is a very useful tool for mobilizing domestic support for achieving the neoconservative goal of making America's unipolar moment irreversible through restriction of liberties at home and wars of aggression aimed primarily at the Middle East. This goal coincided with -- and drew strength from -- the Zionist agenda in the Middle East and also the theologically motivated support of America's Christian right for Israeli expansionism.
About Speaker - M. Shahid Alam is a professor of economics at Northeastern University, Boston. His writings have appeared in leading economic journals, including Economic Development and Cultural Change, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, American Economic Review, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Studies in Contemporary Islam and Kyklos; in popular newspapers and web sites including Dissident Voice.org, Counterpunch, Al Ahram, Commondreams.org, Dawn, Holiday, Asia Times, Scoop, and Outlook India; in literary journals, including Chicago Review, Marlboro Review and Beloit Poetry Journal. He has published many books including Poverty from the Wealth of Nations (Macmillan, 2000), Governments and Markets in Economic Development Strategies (Praeger: 1989), and Is There An Islamic Problem (Kuala Lumpur: The Other Press, 2004). Many of Alam's articles have come under harsh criticism for his strong stances against Israel and America's foreign policy. Salaams Everyone, I'm looking for volunteers to help out at the San Francisco Food Bank ( www.sffoodbank.org ) this Saturday (3/17) from 12:30-3:30. The SF Food Bank provides food for over 500 programs including soup kitchens, food pantries and after school programs. As part of the Islamic Society of San Francisco, volunteers will to help to sort donations, repackage bulk items and stock grocery shelves. We need 12 people and so far about six have committed. EVENT SUMMARY: 8 volunteers shared part of their weekend to help prepare boxes of food items for the low-income & senior citizen population of San Francisco. Over 1,000 boxes were prepare that day where each box helps provide food for an entire month. As more and more baby boomers enter into retirement, the need for these services will continue to grow and it is up to each and every one of us to be able to do what we can to try and help support the segments of the population that needs our help. While all non-profit organizations have a shortage of enough dedicated, committed volunteers, the concept of structuring a drop-in volunteer program without any recurring committements is an attractive way to get people to volunteer. The S.F. Food Bank model is structured to allow anyone to sign up and show up for as many or as few food sort activities as they wish. Perhaps other organizations that wish to take advantage of volunteers can consider employing this model for their volunteer efforts as well. Thank you Kayyum for organizing this volunteer event.

CAL MSA presents: 'Contentment with Divine Decree' a two-part halaqa series with Yahya Rhodus. It should be an amazing talk on one of the fundamental aspects of our belief and faith. Sidi Yahya Rhodus gave a similar talk a few weeks ago in San Ramon and it was phenomenal. Jazakallah khair - Ahmad.
Yahya Rhodus' Biography: Ustadh Yahya was born and raised in America's midwest. At the age of 19 he became Muslim in the San Francisco Bay Area and began studying with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and distinguished scholars visiting from Mauritania, Shaykh Khatry & Shaykh Abdullah Ould Ahmadna. In 1998, he left for Mauritania to further his studies of the Islamic sciences. There he spent over two years sitting with some of Mauritania's great scholars, including Shaykh Murabit al-Hajj, one the great scholars of our age. In 2000, he moved to Tarim, Yemen to continue his studies at the prestigious Dar al-Mustafa. There he studied with renowned scholars Habib 'Ali al-Jifry, Habib 'Umar bin Hafiz, and other local scholars. In 2005, he returned from his studies overseas to serve as a full-time teacher at Zaytuna Institute ( www.zaytuna.org ).

Speaker: Prof. M. Shahid Alam - Why did the United States choose to frame its new global posture after 9-11 as a 'global war on terrorism?' At first sight, this does not make sense, since terrorism is a tactic not an ideology. The speaker will explain why a war on terrorism is a very useful tool for mobilizing domestic support for achieving the neoconservative goal of making America's unipolar moment irreversible through restriction of liberties at home and wars of aggression aimed primarily at the Middle East. This goal coincided with -- and drew strength from -- the Zionist agenda in the Middle East and also the theologically motivated support of America's Christian right for Israeli expansionism.
About Speaker - M. Shahid Alam is a professor of economics at Northeastern University, Boston. His writings have appeared in leading economic journals, including Economic Development and Cultural Change, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, American Economic Review, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Studies in Contemporary Islam and Kyklos; in popular newspapers and web sites including Dissident Voice.org, Counterpunch, Al Ahram, Commondreams.org, Dawn, Holiday, Asia Times, Scoop, and Outlook India; in literary journals, including Chicago Review, Marlboro Review and Beloit Poetry Journal. EVENT SUMMARY: 8 volunteers shared part of their weekend to help prepare boxes of food items for the low-income & senior citizen population of San Francisco. Over 1,000 boxes were prepare that day where each box helps provide food for an entire month. As more and more baby boomers enter into retirement, the need for these services will continue to grow and it is up to each and every one of us to be able to do what we can to try and help support the segments of the population that needs our help. While all non-profit organizations have a shortage of enough dedicated, committed volunteers, the concept of structuring a drop-in volunteer program without any recurring committements is an attractive way to get people to volunteer. The S.F. Food Bank model is structured to allow anyone to sign up and show up for as many or as few food sort activities as they wish. Perhaps other organizations that wish to take advantage of volunteers can consider employing this model for their volunteer efforts as well. Thank you Kayyum for organizing this volunteer event.

Sidi Yahya Rhodus gave a similar talk a few weeks ago in San Ramon and it was phenomenal. Jazakallah khair - Ahmad.
Yahya Rhodus' Biography: Ustadh Yahya was born and raised in America's midwest. At the age of 19 he became Muslim in the San Francisco Bay Area and began studying with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and distinguished scholars visiting from Mauritania, Shaykh Khatry & Shaykh Abdullah Ould Ahmadna. In 1998, he left for Mauritania to further his studies of the Islamic sciences. There he spent over two years sitting with some of Mauritania's great scholars, including Shaykh Murabit al-Hajj, one the great scholars of our age. In 2000, he moved to Tarim, Yemen to continue his studies at the prestigious Dar al-Mustafa. There he studied with renowned scholars Habib 'Ali al-Jifry, Habib 'Umar bin Hafiz, and other local scholars. In 2005, he returned from his studies overseas to serve as a full-time teacher at Zaytuna Institute ( www.zaytuna.org ).

To some, Kabul was a cosmopolitan and progressive city; to others, it represented everything they did not have and could not imagine possible. Today, it is a city emerging from two decades of war, filled with a generation that has seen nothing but destruction. Rather than taking a sensationalist outsider?s perspective, this masterful documentary by first-time filmmakers David Edwards, Dr. Maliha Zulfacar, and Gregory Whitmore offers panoramic views of the city, as if filmed by an everyman on the streets of Kabul. The camera is in a constant state of quiet motion, swooping past money exchangers, government officials, U.N. Peace Keepers, and kite runners. There are no inserted queries on terrorism, diatribes about the burqa, or elongated shots of starving children within such organic motion; rather, the seemingly invisible filmmakers allow the residents, landscape and traditions of Kabul to illustrate the current state of the city and its people. Throughout the film, the camera serves less as a microscope and more as an eye, mimicking the sight of anyone and everyone on the streets of this legendary capitol city.

* - There are many events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without know that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.
* - I've chosen to partake in SOME of these events and hope to share them with you in case you might find them of interest. My ultimate preference would be for one or all of the community websites listed above to take over and improve the ability to track these events so that I too can find one location for upcoming events. Everything is a work in progress, so I do hope you enjoy receiving this e-mail on a weekly basis. If you do not, I will not be offended if you ask me to remove your from this private list. Faith in Violence-Free Families: Building Partnerships for Change - March 28, 2007
What: The Tri-Valley Haven and SEMAH Inc. a local domestic violence prevention organization, are partnering with the Marine Abused Women?s Services (MAWS) to present a workshop to strengthen the connection between violence prevention advocates and faith leaders. Participants will also discuss strategies for stopping the violence before it occurs. The workshop is funded by the California Department of Health Services. All faith leaders, domestic violence prevention advocates and other interested individuals are invited to participate in this groundbreaking dialogue and strategy planning workshop.
