Midwest Flooding Leave Tens of Thousands in Need. Severe storms across the Midwest have caused the worst flooding in over 15 years, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes. The floods have already ruined an estimated 5 million acres of farmland for corn and soybean, increasing fears of food inflation for U.S. consumers and dozens of countries relying on American exports. Over an additional 200,000 acres of crop land from Iowa to Missouri are still at high risk of being flooded. Iowa, which helps produce over one-third of U.S. corn and soybeans, was the worst-affected region, incurring over $1 billion in property damages. Twenty-four people have died, 140 people have been injured and another 40,000 people have been evacuated from flooded areas of Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota and are in urgent need of assistance. Islamic Relief is launching an emergency appeal to assist in the recovery efforts. Your help is urgently needed to aid the victims of this disaster. Please Donate Generously.

Eight film night screenings in 2007 were attended by over 15,000 film-goers with over 7,000 attending the July screening of 16 CANDLES in Dolores Park. Over 50,000 people have attended Film Night in San Francisco since 2003. Films are presented free of charge on a giant outdoor screen in beautiful park settings. Attendees are encouraged to picnic before screenings and are discouraged from bringing chairs. Bring Jackets/Blankets too!

Bay Area Transit (Including BART) will be FREE till NOON

Circle Thursday, June 19 on your calendars and get ready for a free BART ride. June 19 is the one and only day this year the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission will provide free rides on BART and 29 other transit systems. BART will be free until noon on Thursday, June 19. Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) and Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains, and Golden Gate, Alameda-Oakland, Alameda- Harbor Bay and Vallejo ferries will also be free until noon. Bay Area bus and light-rail systems will be free all day. Plan your BART trip with bart.gov's easy-to-use online QuickPlanner. To plan trips on other transit systems, go to 511.org, and click "Transit."
Daily fee parking in BART lots will be free and no validation will be required on June 19, but all reserved/permit parking regulations and other parking regulations will be enforced. All other BART rules will also be in effect, including no eating or drinking. Bike rules will be enforced, as well. To protect public health, the Air District will continue to issue Spare the Air advisories when ozone levels are expected to exceed federal guidelines. However, there will not be free transit on those days. You can subscribe to free email Air Alerts at www.sparetheair.org .
So spare the air and walk, bike, or take the bus to BART on Thursday, June 19!

High Commission for Refugees to celebrate World Refugee Day in San Francisco and to discuss the status of Afghanistan. More than 5 million Afghans have returned to their homeland since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. But growing insecurity threatens the gains the country has made since then. While the refugees have returned with high hopes, they have found that harsh realities await them. Localized conflict continues to displace some communities within Afghanistan, while poverty and lack of job opportunities oblige many Afghans to seek employment abroad. This event is co-sponsored by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, The Asia Foundation, Human Rights Watch, the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley, the International Rescue Committee, Global Exchange, Women's Interfaith Dialogue on the Middle East, World Savvy, Students for Justice in Palestine, and the Persian Center. Advanced registration is recommended for guaranteed seating. However, pre-registration is not required and walk-ins on the day of this program are welcome.

Last time we did this one, many of you told me how much you enjoyed serving the children, so I am trying to make it one of our 'regulars.' The volunteer session begins at 8:30 am and ends at approximately 11:30 am. Won't you join us? The League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark and Union City (LWVFNUC) is the local arm of the national League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government. The League works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League is the descendant organization that fought for and won the right to vote for women in the United States. Sister Syeda Reshma Yunus has been a member of the League of Women Voters for several years. Professionally, she works as a Business consultant and property manager, she is a Certified Public Accountant and has Masters in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance; her real passion, however, is community engagement and service.
Syeda Reshma believes in developing bridges of understanding and participation between Muslim and Non-Muslim communities; therefore, she serves on several Boards and committee's in both the Muslim and mainstream community. These include: the Fremont Chief of Police's Citizen's Advisory Committee, the Fremont Unified School District 's Citizen's Bond Oversight Committee, Tri-City Interfaith Council, Alameda County Budget Work Group and the California State sponsored Faith in Violence Free Families Advisory Board. She is also on the Board of the Child Abuse Prevention Agency and serves on the City of San Jose 's Family Domestic Violence Prevention Advisory Council. She is a member of the SBIA Media Committee and the Northern California Islamic Council.
She was active in the South Alameda County Peace and Justice Coalition which fought to preserve civil liberties and achieve resolutions from Cities and Counties against the USA Patriot Act. In addition, she co-founded two help-lines for victims of abuse and co-founded SEMAH Inc. an Interfaith organization that works to prevent domestic violence and build more peaceful communities.
The League of Women Voters California, at its biennial Council in May 2008, recognized the League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark and Union City , under the current leadership of Syeda Yunus, as the only League amongst 67 other California Leagues that attained the ?Meet the Challenge? distinction for 2007/2008! The criteria included fulfillment of specific program and voter service goals as well increases in membership.

Circle Thursday, June 19 on your calendars and get ready for a free BART ride. June 19 is the one and only day this year the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission will provide free rides on BART and 29 other transit systems. BART will be free until noon on Thursday, June 19. Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) and Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains, and Golden Gate, Alameda-Oakland, Alameda- Harbor Bay and Vallejo ferries will also be free until noon. Bay Area bus and light-rail systems will be free all day. Plan your BART trip with bart.gov's easy-to-use online QuickPlanner. To plan trips on other transit systems, go to 511.org, and click "Transit."
Daily fee parking in BART lots will be free and no validation will be required on June 19, but all reserved/permit parking regulations and other parking regulations will be enforced. All other BART rules will also be in effect, including no eating or drinking. Bike rules will be enforced, as well. To protect public health, the Air District will continue to issue Spare the Air advisories when ozone levels are expected to exceed federal guidelines. However, there will not be free transit on those days. You can subscribe to free email Air Alerts at www.sparetheair.org .
So spare the air and walk, bike, or take the bus to BART on Thursday, June 19!

Habeas corpus prevents the indefinite detainment of a prisoner without being charged or brought before a court. Defenders of the right say that suspending the writ of habeas corpus has historically been limited to "when the public safety may require it" and has only been done a handful of times in U.S. history. Can the United States effectively defend against terrorism without suspending habeas corpus? What does it take to protect our freedom? With the Supreme Court set to rule on Boumediene v. Bush and Al Odah v. U.S. (which concern habeas petitions of detainees at Guantanamo Bay), panelists will bring you a deeper understanding of these important issues. High Commission for Refugees to celebrate World Refugee Day in San Francisco and to discuss the status of Afghanistan. More than 5 million Afghans have returned to their homeland since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. But growing insecurity threatens the gains the country has made since then. While the refugees have returned with high hopes, they have found that harsh realities await them. Localized conflict continues to displace some communities within Afghanistan, while poverty and lack of job opportunities oblige many Afghans to seek employment abroad. This event is co-sponsored by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, The Asia Foundation, Human Rights Watch, the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley, the International Rescue Committee, Global Exchange, Women's Interfaith Dialogue on the Middle East, World Savvy, Students for Justice in Palestine, and the Persian Center. Advanced registration is recommended for guaranteed seating. However, pre-registration is not required and walk-ins on the day of this program are welcome.

Last time we did this one, many of you told me how much you enjoyed serving the children, so I am trying to make it one of our 'regulars.' The volunteer session begins at 8:30 am and ends at approximately 11:30 am. Won't you join us? The League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark and Union City (LWVFNUC) is the local arm of the national League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government. The League works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League is the descendant organization that fought for and won the right to vote for women in the United States. Sister Syeda Reshma Yunus has been a member of the League of Women Voters for several years. Professionally, she works as a Business consultant and property manager, she is a Certified Public Accountant and has Masters in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance; her real passion, however, is community engagement and service.
Syeda Reshma believes in developing bridges of understanding and participation between Muslim and Non-Muslim communities; therefore, she serves on several Boards and committee's in both the Muslim and mainstream community. These include: the Fremont Chief of Police's Citizen's Advisory Committee, the Fremont Unified School District 's Citizen's Bond Oversight Committee, Tri-City Interfaith Council, Alameda County Budget Work Group and the California State sponsored Faith in Violence Free Families Advisory Board. She is also on the Board of the Child Abuse Prevention Agency and serves on the City of San Jose 's Family Domestic Violence Prevention Advisory Council. She is a member of the SBIA Media Committee and the Northern California Islamic Council.
She was active in the South Alameda County Peace and Justice Coalition which fought to preserve civil liberties and achieve resolutions from Cities and Counties against the USA Patriot Act. In addition, she co-founded two help-lines for victims of abuse and co-founded SEMAH Inc. an Interfaith organization that works to prevent domestic violence and build more peaceful communities.
The League of Women Voters California, at its biennial Council in May 2008, recognized the League of Women Voters of Fremont, Newark and Union City , under the current leadership of Syeda Yunus, as the only League amongst 67 other California Leagues that attained the ?Meet the Challenge? distinction for 2007/2008! The criteria included fulfillment of specific program and voter service goals as well increases in membership.
