Experience live on-stage the West Coast Premiere of said Said by Kenneth Lin. The play takes place simultaneously in Algiers in 1954 during the infamous Battle of Algiers and in present day Vermont. It is the story of Kasbah doctor/poet turned U.S. Poet Laureate Andre Sa?d and his French interrogator, Major Michel Garcet. The play jumps between the two time periods as the two old combatants seek to reveal the truth about the mysterious and indecipherable writing that lined Sa?d's prison cell. Will the code reveal that Sa?d was a terrorist? A patriotic, freedom fighter? Or a pawn in the world's first urban terrorist war?

The Islamic Networks Group (ING) is currently recruiting for speakers and is pleased to announce a series of training workshops in Feb. 2008. Since 1993, the Islamic Speakers Bureau has been the core of ING's mission to increase religious literacy and promote mutual respect among people of all different faiths.
By volunteering as a speaker, you can?
? Help strengthen positive perceptions about Muslims and the Islamic faith by delivering a variety of presentations to public and private schools, colleges, universities, community centers and other organizations in the Bay Area
? Serve your community through a reputable and established 15-year old educational outreach organization
? Present with well-researched materials developed by scholars
? Receive pre-scheduled invitations to speak to public audiences, thereby strengthening your speaking skills in the process
? Network and collaborate with other volunteers in the Islamic Speakers Bureau

Pre-registration is required for a fee of $25 which includes lunch, refreshments and training materials. Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Religiously-fueled conflicts around the world are intensifying. We must push beyond "tolerance" to deeper, more enduring inter-religious understanding and cooperation. This conference takes inter-religious dialogue to a new level of engagement, by meeting one another through our sacred texts. By hearing others read and interpret one's own sacred texts, Jews, Christians, and Muslims will arrive at deeper understanding not only of each other but of themselves. Through classes, workshops, and plenary lectures with Muslim, Christian, and Jewish leaders, participants will deepen their own faith commitments, build mutual understanding, and learn how to increase co-operative action for the common good.
The Epiphany West 2008 conference is co-sponsored by Jewish, Muslim and Episcopalian institutes of religious study, affiliated with Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union. Those attending with our Sonoma County interfaith group have been offered a generous tuition discount. Detailed conference, class and workshop descriptions are on line.

Towards Coexistence Wrestling Islam from Intolerance by Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl

Dr. Abou El-Fadl, a professor of law at UCLA, will discuss the current trend in the Muslim world towards an extremely exclusive and disturbingly narrow vision of Islamic theology and law. In discussing the notion and nature of revealed Truth, Abou El Fadl will attempt to show how the Muslim community of faith can understand such revealed Truths in a way that is true to the Islamic texts yet compatible with principles of coexistence, pluralism, and human equality. Dr. Abou El Fadl offers a theological perspective that attempts to transcend narrow views of religious doctrine and reconcile seemingly contradictory principles.
In light of disturbing events taking place throughout the Muslim world, the goal of this 4-part series is to create a dialogue that critically and honestly confronts important contemporary issues in the Muslim world. The series will focus on the struggle to define and understand Islam in a way that is true to its essence yet faces up to modern challenges and is compatible with contemporary realities. The Dhol Di Awaz? Committee of UC Berkeley is proud to present their 10th annual West Coast Premier Bhangra Competition. This Bhangra competition is an opportunity for different communities to come together as people united by the beauty and spirit of the Punjabi culture. Dhol Di Awaz? has grown into the largest Bhangra competition on the West Coast, attracting over 3,000 people last year. Due to the competition?s popularity, growth, and extensive media coverage we have reserved the renowned Flint Center in Cupertino, CA for February 2, 2008. We are expecting to sell out with a crowd of over 2,500.
This year Dhol Di Awaz? has decided to be more inclusive of its entire South Asian community and will be donating its proceeds not just to the Sikh Student Association, but also to UNICEF, American Red Cross, SSCF Foundation. Additional proceeds will be used to fund community events including mentorship workshops, College Planning Day, South Asian Human Rights conferences, and other events.
In our efforts to unify the surrounding South Asian communities, these events will be inclusive of all faiths, races, and cultures. The competition this year will take place on February 2nd 2008 at 6:00 P.M. at the famed Flint Center in Cupertino, CA. The Theater has a capacity of over 2,500 seats, and are anticipating another sell out year. Recently, we have expanded our ticket sales to online tickets at ticketmaster.com and bhangratickets.com. This year we expect 30-40 teams submitting applications for the competition. In our desire to promote the growth of competition, we have already pledged to financially assist the teams that qualify for the competition. We look forward to a spectacular competition!
Teams are travelling far and wide from as far away as Michigan, Davis, UCI, etc.

Building bridges of understanding, deepening spiritual connection, cooperating for peace and justice. Convened by Quaker interfaith activist Anthony Manousos, with Muslim and Jewish co-leaders. Are you concerned that religion is being used as an excuse to promote violence and hatred? Since 9/11/2001, people of different faith traditions have been coming together to build bridges of understanding, to deepen their spiritual connection, and to work together for peace and justice. This workshop will help you to become more involved in this growing movement to transform our culture and make the world more just and peaceful.
Who is this program for? Interfaith Peacemaking is for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of other religious faiths and a clearer understanding of their own. It is for those who care deeply about peace and reconciliation and want to be positive change agents in their communities and the world. Participants can be Quaker or non-Quaker. Persons of any religious discipline or no religious discipline are welcome at Quaker Center and at this program.
Who will lead this workshop? This weekend will be led by Anthony Manousos, a member of Santa Monica Friends Meeting and of the Christian Interfaith Relations Committee of Friends General Conference. Anthony has written pamphlets and articles as well as given workshops on Interfaith Peacemaking at the FGC Gathering and other Quaker venues (see his bio below). Anthony will be joined by Alan Solonomow (AFSC Middle East Program Director), Saafa Ibrahim (Council on American Islamic Relations), and others as Way opens.
What will happen at this workshop? There will be opportunities for discussion, reflection and prayer as we explore peacemaking from a Jewish, Muslim as well as Quaker perspective. You will have a chance to dialogue with those active in this movement. You will learn techniques to promote interfaith conversation, including Compassionate Listening, Sacred Listening, and Interfaith Cafes. You will also be given information about the latest print and audiovisual resources to help you in this work.

This conference takes inter-religious dialogue to a new level of engagement, by meeting one another through our sacred texts. By hearing others read and interpret one's own sacred texts, Jews, Christians, and Muslims will arrive at deeper understanding not only of each other but of themselves. Through classes, workshops, and plenary lectures with Muslim, Christian, and Jewish leaders, participants will deepen their own faith commitments, build mutual understanding, and learn how to increase co-operative action for the common good.

Towards Coexistence Wrestling Islam from Intolerance by Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl

Dr. Abou El-Fadl, a professor of law at UCLA, will discuss the current trend in the Muslim world towards an extremely exclusive and disturbingly narrow vision of Islamic theology and law. In discussing the notion and nature of revealed Truth, Abou El Fadl will attempt to show how the Muslim community of faith can understand such revealed Truths in a way that is true to the Islamic texts yet compatible with principles of coexistence, pluralism, and human equality. Dr. Abou El Fadl offers a theological perspective that attempts to transcend narrow views of religious doctrine and reconcile seemingly contradictory principles.
In light of disturbing events taking place throughout the Muslim world, the goal of this 4-part series is to create a dialogue that critically and honestly confronts important contemporary issues in the Muslim world. The series will focus on the struggle to define and understand Islam in a way that is true to its essence yet faces up to modern challenges and is compatible with contemporary realities. The Dhol Di Awaz? Committee of UC Berkeley is proud to present their 10th annual West Coast Premier Bhangra Competition. This Bhangra competition is an opportunity for different communities to come together as people united by the beauty and spirit of the Punjabi culture. Dhol Di Awaz? has grown into the largest Bhangra competition on the West Coast, attracting over 3,000 people last year. Due to the competition?s popularity, growth, and extensive media coverage we have reserved the renowned Flint Center in Cupertino, CA for February 2, 2008. We are expecting to sell out with a crowd of over 2,500.
This year Dhol Di Awaz? has decided to be more inclusive of its entire South Asian community and will be donating its proceeds not just to the Sikh Student Association, but also to UNICEF, American Red Cross, SSCF Foundation. Additional proceeds will be used to fund community events including mentorship workshops, College Planning Day, South Asian Human Rights conferences, and other events.
In our efforts to unify the surrounding South Asian communities, these events will be inclusive of all faiths, races, and cultures. The competition this year will take place on February 2nd 2008 at 6:00 P.M. at the famed Flint Center in Cupertino, CA. The Theater has a capacity of over 2,500 seats, and are anticipating another sell out year. Recently, we have expanded our ticket sales to online tickets at ticketmaster.com and bhangratickets.com. This year we expect 30-40 teams submitting applications for the competition. In our desire to promote the growth of competition, we have already pledged to financially assist the teams that qualify for the competition. We look forward to a spectacular competition!

Building bridges of understanding, deepening spiritual connection, cooperating for peace and justice. Convened by Quaker interfaith activist Anthony Manousos, with Muslim and Jewish co-leaders. Are you concerned that religion is being used as an excuse to promote violence and hatred? Since 9/11/2001, people of different faith traditions have been coming together to build bridges of understanding, to deepen their spiritual connection, and to work together for peace and justice. This workshop will help you to become more involved in this growing movement to transform our culture and make the world more just and peaceful.
Who is this program for? Interfaith Peacemaking is for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of other religious faiths and a clearer understanding of their own. It is for those who care deeply about peace and reconciliation and want to be positive change agents in their communities and the world. Participants can be Quaker or non-Quaker. Persons of any religious discipline or no religious discipline are welcome at Quaker Center and at this program.
Who will lead this workshop? This weekend will be led by Anthony Manousos, a member of Santa Monica Friends Meeting and of the Christian Interfaith Relations Committee of Friends General Conference. Anthony has written pamphlets and articles as well as given workshops on Interfaith Peacemaking at the FGC Gathering and other Quaker venues (see his bio below). Anthony will be joined by Alan Solonomow (AFSC Middle East Program Director), Saafa Ibrahim (Council on American Islamic Relations), and others as Way opens.
What will happen at this workshop? There will be opportunities for discussion, reflection and prayer as we explore peacemaking from a Jewish, Muslim as well as Quaker perspective. You will have a chance to dialogue with those active in this movement. You will learn techniques to promote interfaith conversation, including Compassionate Listening, Sacred Listening, and Interfaith Cafes. You will also be given information about the latest print and audiovisual resources to help you in this work.
