Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

The topic of his talk will be The Quran and Its Interpreters. You are cordially invited to a meeting with Professor Mahmoud Ayoub. Prof Mahmoud Ayoub is a professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at Temple University. He is teaching for this semester at Graduate Theological Union (GTU), a seminary at Berkeley. He is a renowned Islamic scholar and highly respected academician. In spite of being deprived of eye sight, he achieved high credentials in academics and has published many books and articles. Prof. Mahmoud Ayoub - Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion
B.A. (Philosophy), American University of Beirut 1964
M.A. (Religious Thought), University of Pennsylvania 1966
Ph.D. (History of Religion), Harvard University 1975
Mahmoud Ayoub was born in 1938 in south Lebanon. Upon completion of his education, he has authored a number of books in English and Arabic in the area of Islam and Inter-religious dialogue. The most notable are Redemptive Suffering in Islam and The Qur'an and Its Interpreters (2 volumes to date). He has published over fifty scholarly articles both as chapters in edited works as well as in well-known academic refereed journals. Two of his recent works are Crisis of Muslim History: Religion and Politics in Early Islam, 2003, and (forthcoming, 2004) Islam in Faith and History (both published by Oneworld Publications). Currently he is working on the third volume of The Qur'an and Its Interpreters.

Dr. Paul Larudee is a San Francisco Bay Area activist calling for justice in the Palestine-Israel conflict. He was born to an Iranian Presbyterian minister and his American missionary spouse in 1946 and grew up in the American Midwest.
He has visited the Palestinian region ten times since 1965, including four times with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement that applies nonviolent principles to resist the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Paul was among seven ISM volunteers wounded by Israeli gunfire in April, 2002 in an otherwise nonviolent attempt to help Palestinian families. This month he will share his personal stories and insights with AMILA and provide a glimpse of how the parties to the conflict view themselves.
Dr. Larudee is one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement, which seeks to break the siege of Gaza through seaborne nonviolent action. He hold a Ph.D. in linguistics from Georgetown University and spent 14 years in Arab countries as a contracted U.S. government advisor. A MYSTICAL JOURNEY: Sufi Music and Other Expressions of Devotion from the Muslim World seeks to express the rich diversity of devotional expressions in Islam reflecting different geographies, languages and traditions. The performance will feature artists from Algeria, Bosnia, Canada, India, Iran, Pakistan and Syria showcasing music from various Sufi and other esoteric traditions of Islam. Though different in form, these acts of devotion are common in their peaceful search for the divine and represent the pluralistic traditions and mystical unity among different communities of interpretation within the Muslim world.
Music and musicians play an important role in the Muslim world. From Indonesia, through South and Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, music serves not only as entertainment for various Muslim communities, but also as a way to express devotion and reinforce common values and traditions. Whether bringing listeners closer to God, sustaining cultural memory through epic tales, or strengthening the bonds of community through festivity and celebration, music and musicians are central to the cultural life of Muslims throughout the world.

A group of us are planning a fundraising event for Masjid Waritheen and Clara Mohammed School masjidulwaritheen.org . The tentative date for the fundraising dinner is Saturday, June 14th, 2008 insha Allah. The date is tentative until we book the restaurant and speakers. Meanwhile, we?re just beginning to plan the event and want the involvement of the entire community to support the effort in any way they can. Imam Faheem Shuaibe who?s the imam of the masjid has been serving the Bay Area and national Muslim American communities for decades now without asking for much in return; may God continue to bless him and increase his sustenance. We would now like to contribute to Masjid Waritheen in some small way by holding this first of its kind fundraising event in the Bay Area.

Dr. Mohja Kahf was born in Damascus, Syria and was raised in Utah, Indiana, and New Jersey. She received her doctorate from Rutgers University in Comparative Literature and currently teaches at the University of Arkansas. Her first book, 'Western Representations of the Muslim Woman' (UT Press, 1999), explores the image of Muslim women in medieval and Renaissance European literature. Her novel, 'The Girl in a Tangerine Scarf' (2006) was just announced Book of the Year in Bloomington, Indiana.
Mohja Kahf's poetry has been published in literary anthologies and journals since the early 1990s, recently appearing in The Paris Review and The Atlanta Review. She has competed in the National Poetry Slam (Chicago,1999) and in 2002, she received an Arkansas Arts Council grant for literary achievement.
Bay Area AMILA helped birth one of her first creative projects, when Mohja wrote a play called 'The Muhajjaba on the Motorcycle', which was produced and performed by AMILA members in the early 1990s. She has presented her work at AMILA events, including her dissertation on the image of Muslim women in European literature, as well as her story, 'Lost Pages from Bukhari'. We will continue this tradition and feature her latest work at this upcoming gathering.

Rez Abbasi is a groundbreaking modern jazz guitar player who has developed a unique sound as both a composer and an instrumentalist. Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

The topic of his talk will be The Quran and Its Interpreters. You are cordially invited to a meeting with Professor Mahmoud Ayoub. Prof Mahmoud Ayoub is a professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at Temple University. He is teaching for this semester at Graduate Theological Union (GTU), a seminary at Berkeley. He is a renowned Islamic scholar and highly respected academician. In spite of being deprived of eye sight, he achieved high credentials in academics and has published many books and articles. Prof. Mahmoud Ayoub - Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion

Ph.D. (History of Religion), Harvard University 1975
Mahmoud Ayoub was born in 1938 in south Lebanon. Upon completion of his education, he has authored a number of books in English and Arabic in the area of Islam and Inter-religious dialogue. The most notable are Redemptive Suffering in Islam and The Qur'an and Its Interpreters (2 volumes to date). He has published over fifty scholarly articles both as chapters in edited works as well as in well-known academic refereed journals. Two of his recent works are Crisis of Muslim History: Religion and Politics in Early Islam, 2003, and (forthcoming, 2004) Islam in Faith and History (both published by Oneworld Publications). Currently he is working on the third volume of The Qur'an and Its Interpreters.

Dr. Paul Larudee is a San Francisco Bay Area activist calling for justice in the Palestine-Israel conflict. He was born to an Iranian Presbyterian minister and his American missionary spouse in 1946 and grew up in the American Midwest.
He has visited the Palestinian region ten times since 1965, including four times with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement that applies nonviolent principles to resist the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Paul was among seven ISM volunteers wounded by Israeli gunfire in April, 2002 in an otherwise nonviolent attempt to help Palestinian families. This month he will share his personal stories and insights with AMILA and provide a glimpse of how the parties to the conflict view themselves.
Dr. Larudee is one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement, which seeks to break the siege of Gaza through seaborne nonviolent action. He hold a Ph.D. in linguistics from Georgetown University and spent 14 years in Arab countries as a contracted U.S. government advisor. A MYSTICAL JOURNEY: Sufi Music and Other Expressions of Devotion from the Muslim World seeks to express the rich diversity of devotional expressions in Islam reflecting different geographies, languages and traditions. The performance will feature artists from Algeria, Bosnia, Canada, India, Iran, Pakistan and Syria showcasing music from various Sufi and other esoteric traditions of Islam. Though different in form, these acts of devotion are common in their peaceful search for the divine and represent the pluralistic traditions and mystical unity among different communities of interpretation within the Muslim world.
Music and musicians play an important role in the Muslim world. From Indonesia, through South and Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, music serves not only as entertainment for various Muslim communities, but also as a way to express devotion and reinforce common values and traditions. Whether bringing listeners closer to God, sustaining cultural memory through epic tales, or strengthening the bonds of community through festivity and celebration, music and musicians are central to the cultural life of Muslims throughout the world.

A group of us are planning a fundraising event for Masjid Waritheen and Clara Mohammed School masjidulwaritheen.org . The tentative date for the fundraising dinner is Saturday, June 14th, 2008 insha Allah. The date is tentative until we book the restaurant and speakers. Meanwhile, we?re just beginning to plan the event and want the involvement of the entire community to support the effort in any way they can. Imam Faheem Shuaibe who?s the imam of the masjid has been serving the Bay Area and national Muslim American communities for decades now without asking for much in return; may God continue to bless him and increase his sustenance. We would now like to contribute to Masjid Waritheen in some small way by holding this first of its kind fundraising event in the Bay Area.

Dr. Mohja Kahf was born in Damascus, Syria and was raised in Utah, Indiana, and New Jersey. She received her doctorate from Rutgers University in Comparative Literature and currently teaches at the University of Arkansas. Her first book, 'Western Representations of the Muslim Woman' (UT Press, 1999), explores the image of Muslim women in medieval and Renaissance European literature. Her novel, 'The Girl in a Tangerine Scarf' (2006) was just announced Book of the Year in Bloomington, Indiana.
Mohja Kahf's poetry has been published in literary anthologies and journals since the early 1990s, recently appearing in The Paris Review and The Atlanta Review. She has competed in the National Poetry Slam (Chicago,1999) and in 2002, she received an Arkansas Arts Council grant for literary achievement.
Bay Area AMILA helped birth one of her first creative projects, when Mohja wrote a play called 'The Muhajjaba on the Motorcycle', which was produced and performed by AMILA members in the early 1990s. She has presented her work at AMILA events, including her dissertation on the image of Muslim women in European literature, as well as her story, 'Lost Pages from Bukhari'. We will continue this tradition and feature her latest work at this upcoming gathering.
AMILA Gatherings are open to all.

Traveling from New York for a rare West Coast appearance, Rez Abbasi's Bazaar?Rez Abbasi (guitar, sitar-guitar), Kiran Ahluwalia (Indian vocals), Sam Barsh (organ), Dan Weiss (drums)?is one of the East Coast's most vibrant gatherings of musicians. Rez Abbasi is a groundbreaking modern jazz guitar player who has developed a unique sound as both a composer and an instrumentalist.
