Experience live on-stage the West Coast Premiere of said Said by Kenneth Lin. The play takes place simultaneously in Algiers in 1954 during the infamous Battle of Algiers and in present day Vermont. It is the story of Kasbah doctor/poet turned U.S. Poet Laureate Andre Sa?d and his French interrogator, Major Michel Garcet. The play jumps between the two time periods as the two old combatants seek to reveal the truth about the mysterious and indecipherable writing that lined Sa?d's prison cell. Will the code reveal that Sa?d was a terrorist? A patriotic, freedom fighter? Or a pawn in the world's first urban terrorist war?

The Islamic Networks Group (ING) is currently recruiting for speakers and is pleased to announce a series of training workshops in Feb. 2008. Since 1993, the Islamic Speakers Bureau has been the core of ING's mission to increase religious literacy and promote mutual respect among people of all different faiths.
By volunteering as a speaker, you can?
? Help strengthen positive perceptions about Muslims and the Islamic faith by delivering a variety of presentations to public and private schools, colleges, universities, community centers and other organizations in the Bay Area
? Serve your community through a reputable and established 15-year old educational outreach organization
? Present with well-researched materials developed by scholars
? Receive pre-scheduled invitations to speak to public audiences, thereby strengthening your speaking skills in the process
? Network and collaborate with other volunteers in the Islamic Speakers Bureau
For more information and to register for one of the three training workshops of your choice, visit ing.org . Pre-registration is required for a fee of $25 which includes lunch, refreshments and training materials. The pre-registration fee will be refunded when you return to take the written test to become a certified speaker.

Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Pakistan has been experiencing major political crises one after the other for the last year, including terrorist attacks, suspension of the judiciary, emergency rule, a mass lawyers' movement, assassination of opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and postponement of the national elections. The Young Professionals International Forum of the World Affairs Council of Northern California is pleased to sponsor this timely program to highlight results following the February 18th national elections -- where we will learn first-hand information of the Pakistani lawyers' movement and events on the ground in the immediate aftermath of the planned elections. program features three leading Pakistani lawyers speaking to the audience directly from Pakistan over the phone lines, in combination with a local moderator and an additional local speaker -- both who are prominent members of the Bay Area Pakistani community. ~ Salahuddin Ahmed (In Pakistan), Barrister at Law; Partner, Malik, Chaudhry, Ahmed and Siddiqi. - SALAHUDDIN AHMED obtained his law degree from the University of Buckingham, UK in 2000. He was called to the Bar of England & Wales from Lincoln's Inn in 2002. He has been practicing in Karachi since. He is a partner of the law firm of Malik, Chaudhry, Ahmed & Siddiqi, in Karachi. The senior partner of Mr. Ahmed's law firm is Muneer A. Malik, the past President of the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association, who was one of the lawyers who represented the recently-deposed Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry when he was initially removed from his position in March 2007 and then successfully reinstated by the Supreme Court in mid-2007. Mr. Ahmed is also the son of the recently-deposed Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Sabihuddin Ahmed. Mr. Ahmed was arrested without a warrant in Karachi, along with Mr. Ebrahim, on November 5, 2007, during a protest outside the Sindh High Court building, and was released after 15-16 hours in custody.
Zahid Ebrahim (In Pakistan), Advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan; Partner, Ebrahim Hosain - ZAHID EBRAHIM was educated at Sindh Muslim Law College, University of Karachi, and has a Masters in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University. He is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He has practiced law in Pakistan since 1993, and serves as a lecturer in the interpretation of statutes at Sindh Muslim Law College, University of Karachi. He is a founding partner of the law firm of Ebrahim Hosain, and is based in Karachi. Mr. Ebrahim was arrested without a warrant in Karachi, along with Mr. Ahmed, on November 5, 2007, during a protest outside the Sindh High Court building, and was released after 15-16 hours in custody.
Khwaja Ahmad Hosain (In Pakistan), Barrister at Law; Partner, Ebrahim Hosain - KHWAJA AHMAD HOSAIN (or Ahmad Hosain) was educated at Oxford University where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE), and also has a Masters in Arts from London University in Islamic Societies and Cultures. He is a Barrister at Law and was called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1991. Since 1994 he has practiced law in Pakistan. He is a founding partner of the law firm of Ebrahim Hosain, and is based in Lahore. Mr. Hosain was arrested without a warrant in Lahore, along with fifty-five other participants attending a private meeting of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on private property, on November 3, 2007, and was released after over 50 hours in custody.
Naomi Rustomjee (In San Francisco), Partner, Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass LLP - NAOMI RUSTOMJEE's general civil litigation practice emphasizes business, complex commercial, and employment disputes. She has significant trial and arbitration experience. Born in Karachi, and having spent the first 18 years of her life there, Naomi has first-hand knowledge of the political and socio-economic background and dynamics of Pakistan. She received her undergraduate degree in Government, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1985. Following graduation, she was the Harvard Knox Fellow at The London School of Economics and Political Science, where she received a Master's degree in Economic History. She earned her law degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1989, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Naomi has served as a member of the Judiciary Committee of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), and was an early member of the Indian American Bar Association (the predecessor of the South Asian Bar Association ). She currently serves as a member of the Resource Board of the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ).

Building bridges of understanding, deepening spiritual connection, cooperating for peace and justice. Convened by Quaker interfaith activist Anthony Manousos, with Muslim and Jewish co-leaders. Are you concerned that religion is being used as an excuse to promote violence and hatred? Since 9/11/2001, people of different faith traditions have been coming together to build bridges of understanding, to deepen their spiritual connection, and to work together for peace and justice. This workshop will help you to become more involved in this growing movement to transform our culture and make the world more just and peaceful.
Who is this program for? Interfaith Peacemaking is for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of other religious faiths and a clearer understanding of their own. It is for those who care deeply about peace and reconciliation and want to be positive change agents in their communities and the world. Participants can be Quaker or non-Quaker. Persons of any religious discipline or no religious discipline are welcome at Quaker Center and at this program.
Who will lead this workshop? This weekend will be led by Anthony Manousos, a member of Santa Monica Friends Meeting and of the Christian Interfaith Relations Committee of Friends General Conference. Anthony has written pamphlets and articles as well as given workshops on Interfaith Peacemaking at the FGC Gathering and other Quaker venues (see his bio below). Anthony will be joined by Alan Solonomow (AFSC Middle East Program Director), Saafa Ibrahim (Council on American Islamic Relations), and others as Way opens.
What will happen at this workshop? There will be opportunities for discussion, reflection and prayer as we explore peacemaking from a Jewish, Muslim as well as Quaker perspective. You will have a chance to dialogue with those active in this movement. You will learn techniques to promote interfaith conversation, including Compassionate Listening, Sacred Listening, and Interfaith Cafes. You will also be given information about the latest print and audiovisual resources to help you in this work.

Riffat Sultana is the first woman from her family??Ts 500-year lineage of musicians to publicly perform in the West. She is the daughter of Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, who was universally recognized as the finest Pakistani classical singer of his time. Experience live on-stage the West Coast Premiere of said Said by Kenneth Lin. The play takes place simultaneously in Algiers in 1954 during the infamous Battle of Algiers and in present day Vermont. It is the story of Kasbah doctor/poet turned U.S. Poet Laureate Andre Sa?d and his French interrogator, Major Michel Garcet. The play jumps between the two time periods as the two old combatants seek to reveal the truth about the mysterious and indecipherable writing that lined Sa?d's prison cell. Since 1993, the Islamic Speakers Bureau has been the core of ING's mission to increase religious literacy and promote mutual respect among people of all different faiths.
By volunteering as a speaker, you can?
? Help strengthen positive perceptions about Muslims and the Islamic faith by delivering a variety of presentations to public and private schools, colleges, universities, community centers and other organizations in the Bay Area
? Serve your community through a reputable and established 15-year old educational outreach organization
? Present with well-researched materials developed by scholars
? Receive pre-scheduled invitations to speak to public audiences, thereby strengthening your speaking skills in the process
? Network and collaborate with other volunteers in the Islamic Speakers Bureau

Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

He was called to the Bar of England & Wales from Lincoln's Inn in 2002. He has been practicing in Karachi since. He is a partner of the law firm of Malik, Chaudhry, Ahmed & Siddiqi, in Karachi. The senior partner of Mr. Ahmed's law firm is Muneer A. Malik, the past President of the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association, who was one of the lawyers who represented the recently-deposed Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry when he was initially removed from his position in March 2007 and then successfully reinstated by the Supreme Court in mid-2007. Mr. Ahmed is also the son of the recently-deposed Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Sabihuddin Ahmed. Mr. Ahmed was arrested without a warrant in Karachi, along with Mr. Ebrahim, on November 5, 2007, during a protest outside the Sindh High Court building, and was released after 15-16 hours in custody.

He has practiced law in Pakistan since 1993, and serves as a lecturer in the interpretation of statutes at Sindh Muslim Law College, University of Karachi. Mr. Hosain was arrested without a warrant in Lahore, along with fifty-five other participants attending a private meeting of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on private property, on November 3, 2007, and was released after over 50 hours in custody.
Naomi Rustomjee (In San Francisco), Partner, Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass LLP - NAOMI RUSTOMJEE's general civil litigation practice emphasizes business, complex commercial, and employment disputes. She has significant trial and arbitration experience. Born in Karachi, and having spent the first 18 years of her life there, Naomi has first-hand knowledge of the political and socio-economic background and dynamics of Pakistan. She received her undergraduate degree in Government, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1985. Following graduation, she was the Harvard Knox Fellow at The London School of Economics and Political Science, where she received a Master's degree in Economic History. She earned her law degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1989, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Naomi has served as a member of the Judiciary Committee of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), and was an early member of the Indian American Bar Association (the predecessor of the South Asian Bar Association ). She currently serves as a member of the Resource Board of the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ).

Building bridges of understanding, deepening spiritual connection, cooperating for peace and justice. Convened by Quaker interfaith activist Anthony Manousos, with Muslim and Jewish co-leaders. Are you concerned that religion is being used as an excuse to promote violence and hatred? Since 9/11/2001, people of different faith traditions have been coming together to build bridges of understanding, to deepen their spiritual connection, and to work together for peace and justice. This workshop will help you to become more involved in this growing movement to transform our culture and make the world more just and peaceful.
Who is this program for? Interfaith Peacemaking is for those who want to gain a deeper understanding of other religious faiths and a clearer understanding of their own. It is for those who care deeply about peace and reconciliation and want to be positive change agents in their communities and the world. Participants can be Quaker or non-Quaker. Persons of any religious discipline or no religious discipline are welcome at Quaker Center and at this program.
Who will lead this workshop? This weekend will be led by Anthony Manousos, a member of Santa Monica Friends Meeting and of the Christian Interfaith Relations Committee of Friends General Conference. Anthony has written pamphlets and articles as well as given workshops on Interfaith Peacemaking at the FGC Gathering and other Quaker venues (see his bio below). Anthony will be joined by Alan Solonomow (AFSC Middle East Program Director), Saafa Ibrahim (Council on American Islamic Relations), and others as Way opens.
What will happen at this workshop? There will be opportunities for discussion, reflection and prayer as we explore peacemaking from a Jewish, Muslim as well as Quaker perspective. You will have a chance to dialogue with those active in this movement. You will learn techniques to promote interfaith conversation, including Compassionate Listening, Sacred Listening, and Interfaith Cafes. You will also be given information about the latest print and audiovisual resources to help you in this work.

Families are welcomed. Please join us on a hike along beautiful Strawberry Creek, and up the Berkeley Hills with views of the San Francisco Bay.
Directions:
1. Head east on University Ave toward Curtis St 1.3 mi
2. Turn left at Shattuck Ave/Shattuck Square
Continue to follow Shattuck Ave 0.1 mi
3. Turn right at Hearst Ave 0.7 mi
4. Turn right at Gayley Rd 0.3 mi
5. Turn left at Rim Way/Stadium Rim Way 0.3 mi
6. Turn left at N Canyon Rd/Centennial Dr & Continue to follow Centennial Dr
The trailhead is a few hundred yards on your right once you turn on N. Canyon Rd/Centennial Dr. If you reach the Botanical Garden, you have gone too far. Parking: There is limited parking at the trailhead. You can also park at the parking area for the Botanical Garden a few hundred yards above the trailhead and walk back. Please spread the word.

Riffat Sultana is the first woman from her family??Ts 500-year lineage of musicians to publicly perform in the West. She is the daughter of Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, who was universally recognized as the finest Pakistani classical singer of his time. Sultana??Ts family background, as well the countless other musical influences she absorbed growing up in Lahore, Pakistan, have shaped her into a unique artist worthy of distinction. Cost: Free.
