Berkeley architect Martin Hammer recently returned from Pakistan where he is working to bring straw bale construction to the mountainous region devastated by the 2005 earthquake that was responsible for over 80,000 deaths, and left millions without permanent shelter. Straw bale construction is earthquake resistant, energy and resource efficient, and an affordable solution to northern Pakistan's enormous reconstruction needs. Martin Hammer has been involved with the design, engineering, and construction of straw bale buildings for over 10 years, has written extensively about straw bale construction, and is the lead author of the recently proposed straw bale building code for the State of California. Come join us for this informative talk and slideshow. Cost: Free. St. Vincent de Paul regularly receives a large donation of unassembled, beautiful furniture from a generous manufacturer. Volunteers are needed to assemble furniture for sale in their thrift stores in their warehouse in East Oakland. This furniture helps to generate funds to continue their work for the hungry and homeless in Alameda County. All the necessary tools and know-how are provided. We just need enthusiastic volunteers. (This is also great practice if you want to know how to assembly Ikea-type furniture for your own home!) Lunch is provided on-site and we can go out for dessert afterward. Further details to be provided to RSVP'ers. There is also an additional neighborhood cleanup project being organized by St. Vincent de Paul at their Downtown Oakland facility. We have been invited to send a few of our volunteers to help. This project starts at 1:15 pm that afternoon. Directions and task assignments will be provided on the day of the activity for those interested.

Berkeley architect Martin Hammer recently returned from Pakistan where he is working to bring straw bale construction to the mountainous region devastated by the 2005 earthquake that was responsible for over 80,000 deaths, and left millions without permanent shelter. Straw bale construction is earthquake resistant, energy and resource efficient, and an affordable solution to northern Pakistan's enormous reconstruction needs. Martin Hammer has been involved with the design, engineering, and construction of straw bale buildings for over 10 years, has written extensively about straw bale construction, and is the lead author of the recently proposed straw bale building code for the State of California. Come join us for this informative talk and slideshow. Cost: Free. St. Vincent de Paul regularly receives a large donation of unassembled, beautiful furniture from a generous manufacturer. Volunteers are needed to assemble furniture for sale in their thrift stores in their warehouse in East Oakland. This furniture helps to generate funds to continue their work for the hungry and homeless in Alameda County. All the necessary tools and know-how are provided. We just need enthusiastic volunteers. (This is also great practice if you want to know how to assembly Ikea-type furniture for your own home!) Lunch is provided on-site and we can go out for dessert afterward. Further details to be provided to RSVP'ers. There is also an additional neighborhood cleanup project being organized by St. Vincent de Paul at their Downtown Oakland facility. We have been invited to send a few of our volunteers to help. This project starts at 1:15 pm that afternoon.
