Aliens in America is an American situation comedy about a Wisconsin homemaker who arranges to host a foreign exchange student, believing the visitor will help her shy son become more popular. When the student turns out to be a Muslim teenager from Pakistan, her plans go awry.
Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Dr. Paul Larudee has a Ph.D. in linguistics from Georgetown University and spent 14 years in Arab countries as a student, teacher, training administrator, government advisor and Fulbright-Hays exchange lecturer. He has visited Palestine many times since 1965, including four times with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement that nonviolently resists Israeli human rights violations. Paul was one of seven ISM volunteers wounded by Israeli gunfire in April, 2002. In 2006, he was held in Israeli detention for two weeks while seeking to enter the country. He participated in nonviolent resistance to the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He is one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement.
Paul speaks of justice and equitable solutions for all who consider Palestine their home, without discrimination on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity. He offers new perspectives, challenges established viewpoints and presents innovative ideas for making progress toward a just resolution of issues.

In observance of International Human Rights Day on December 10th, this month's AMILA gathering will be focusing on the often conflicting relationship between Western human rights, the Islamic tradition, and contemporary Muslim societies. Helping us to explore this theme will be Dr. Muneer Fareed, who has called on Muslims to address glaring human rights abuses occurring throughout the world. Since his arrival in the United States in 1989, he has served the Muslim community in various capacities, including imam and scholar-in-residence for the Muslim community in Metropolitan Detroit and instructor at the ALIM Program.
Dr. Muneer Fareed is currently the Secretary General for ISNA, the Islamic Society of North America. Previously, Dr. Fareed was an associate professor of Islamic studies in the Department of Near Eastern and Asian Studies at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Fareed's fields of interest include Qur'anic Studies, Islamic Legal Reform, and Islam in the Modern World. He has authored "Legal Reform in the Muslim World: The Anatomy of a Scholarly Dispute." He holds a doctorate in Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

For past several years, local Muslim community leaders have been striving to establish a council to promote coordination and cooperation among mosques and Muslim non-profit organizations through collective consultation. Shura is an Arabic word for consultation which is rooted in the central idea that people are equal in their rights and responsibilities.
Purpose: Achieving Muslim non-profit unity and excellence through cooperation and coordination
Registration: $5 per person
Expected Audience: Imams, directors of Masajid and Muslim non-profits and community members in general.

The event will include presentations by members of the existing councils, a Dinner, presentations by speakers, and a resolution to establish the council.
Northern California Islamic Council is a peer-to-peer network of advice and support for Muslim non-profits with an aim to provide a united Muslim voice to the community at large. We hope that the non-binding consultation among Muslim non-profit organizations will help build trust and confidence in the light of Qur'anic verse, "?those who conduct their affairs by counsel" (43:38)
Primary goals and objectives of the council are to:

? Help build consensus on issues of common interests and concerns
? Improve leadership communication and management skills
? Strengthen communities through education, empowerment and mobilization
The Mosques and Muslim organizations in Northern California serve more than half a million Muslims and the Northern California Islamic Council aspires to leverage the collective wisdom of a truly representative body with clergy and lay leaders from a very diverse Muslim community. Such a successful model already exists in the Shura Council of Southern California for over a decade. You are invited to participate and witness this historic event.

Bangladesh Cyclone Relief Fundraiser

I?m sure many of you are well aware that the Western coast of Bangladesh was struck by a catastrophic cyclone on November 15th. It?s been two weeks and the country is still struggling to recover from the staggering damage estimated at $450 million. As of today, 3,447 people have been found dead, over 2,000 people are missing, 2.5 million people are displaced from their homes and the death toll is expected to reach 10,000 dead. Needless to say, they need our help.
Islamic Relief, a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to international relief and development, has responded by dispatching ground teams to various disaster sites in Bangladesh, along with sanitary kit, food, and temporary shelters. On December 16th, Islamic Relief is holding a fundraiser lunch event in support of the Bangladeshi cyclone victims at Chandni Restaurant in Fremont. Please help support our cause in providing relief to this devastation by attending this event. Tickets are $20 per person. Why Go?: Adding Muslim in front of something should not automatically imply any type of holy or even Islamic connotation. Muslim Basketball is not necessarily Islamic or Un-Islamic, but where Muslims gather to play basketball. Same with Muslim Ski Trips, Muslim Fishing Trips, Muslim Film Festivals, Muslim Picnics, etc. All of these activities provide an alternative venue where Muslims can gather together to instill community amongst each other with other Muslims. Muslims are not attempting to celebrate or make into religious events Basketball, Ski Trips, Fishing Trips, Film Festivals or Christmas. They are merely gathering together to spend time with other Muslims for that particular activity/occasion. It is meant entirely to be in that perspective and nothing more religious is implied.

Justin Tolchuk is a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old just trying to make it through the social nightmare of high school in Medora, Wisconsin, with the help of his well-meaning mom Franny, aspiring-entrepreneur dad Gary, and his popular sister Claire, who is sweetly unaware of how good-looking she is. When Franny signs up for the school's international exchange student program, she pictures an athletic, brilliant Nordic teen who will bestow instant coolness on her outsider son. However, when the Tolchuk's exchange student arrives, he turns out to be Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim. Despite the cultural chasm between them, Justin and Raja quickly develop an unlikely friendship that just might allow them to navigate the minefield that is contemporary high school. It's going to be a very interesting year for Raja, Justin, his family and the entire population of Medora.

Dr. Paul Larudee has a Ph.D. in linguistics from Georgetown University and spent 14 years in Arab countries as a student, teacher, training administrator, government advisor and Fulbright-Hays exchange lecturer. He has visited Palestine many times since 1965, including four times with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement that nonviolently resists Israeli human rights violations. Paul was one of seven ISM volunteers wounded by Israeli gunfire in April, 2002. In 2006, he was held in Israeli detention for two weeks while seeking to enter the country. He participated in nonviolent resistance to the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. He is one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement.
Paul speaks of justice and equitable solutions for all who consider Palestine their home, without discrimination on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity. He offers new perspectives, challenges established viewpoints and presents innovative ideas for making progress toward a just resolution of issues.

In observance of International Human Rights Day on December 10th, this month's AMILA gathering will be focusing on the often conflicting relationship between Western human rights, the Islamic tradition, and contemporary Muslim societies. Helping us to explore this theme will be Dr. Muneer Fareed, who has called on Muslims to address glaring human rights abuses occurring throughout the world. Since his arrival in the United States in 1989, he has served the Muslim community in various capacities, including imam and scholar-in-residence for the Muslim community in Metropolitan Detroit and instructor at the ALIM Program.
Dr. Muneer Fareed is currently the Secretary General for ISNA, the Islamic Society of North America. Previously, Dr. Fareed was an associate professor of Islamic studies in the Department of Near Eastern and Asian Studies at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Fareed's fields of interest include Qur'anic Studies, Islamic Legal Reform, and Islam in the Modern World. He has authored "Legal Reform in the Muslim World: The Anatomy of a Scholarly Dispute." He holds a doctorate in Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

For past several years, local Muslim community leaders have been striving to establish a council to promote coordination and cooperation among mosques and Muslim non-profit organizations through collective consultation. Shura is an Arabic word for consultation which is rooted in the central idea that people are equal in their rights and responsibilities.
Purpose: Achieving Muslim non-profit unity and excellence through cooperation and coordination
Registration: $5 per person
Expected Audience: Imams, directors of Masajid and Muslim non-profits and community members in general.

Bangladesh Cyclone Relief Fundraiser

I?m sure many of you are well aware that the Western coast of Bangladesh was struck by a catastrophic cyclone on November 15th. It?s been two weeks and the country is still struggling to recover from the staggering damage estimated at $450 million. As of today, 3,447 people have been found dead, over 2,000 people are missing, 2.5 million people are displaced from their homes and the death toll is expected to reach 10,000 dead. Needless to say, they need our help.
Islamic Relief, a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to international relief and development, has responded by dispatching ground teams to various disaster sites in Bangladesh, along with sanitary kit, food, and temporary shelters. On December 16th, Islamic Relief is holding a fundraiser lunch event in support of the Bangladeshi cyclone victims at Chandni Restaurant in Fremont. Why Go?: Adding Muslim in front of something should not automatically imply any type of holy or even Islamic connotation. Muslim Basketball is not necessarily Islamic or Un-Islamic, but where Muslims gather to play basketball.
