Upcoming Events of Interest, August 9, 2007, S.F. Bay Area, CA

Asalaam Alaikum and Greetings,

Guess what....I'm on the road again. Been in Las Vegas since Tuesday. Hopefully will make it back home to learn about East Africa and roller coasters this weekend.

U.S. Representative Keith Ellison is scheduled to visit Vegas. A new CAIR chapter has been established in Las Vegas. There are homeless feeding programs and a free clinic being operated out of the local Masjids in Las Vegas. What happens in Vegas need not stay in Vegas.

Forward/share as you see fit.

Thank you,
Atif www.atifslist.com | www.norcalcouncil.org groups.yahoo.com

TWO South Asian Bone Marrow DonorS Needed - August 2007 www.helpvinayandsameer.org | www.helpvinay.org www.facebook.com www.marrow.org
Dear Friends,

Please take a moment to read this post.

My friend, Sameer Bhatia helpvinayandsameer.org), has been diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), which is a cancer of the blood. He is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant. Sameer is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, is 31 years old, and got married last year. His diagnosis was confirmed just weeks ago and caught us all by surprise given that he has always been in peak condition. Sameer, a Stanford alum, is known to many for his efforts in launching the American India Foundation, Project DOSTI, TiE (Chicago), a microfinance fund, and other causes focused on helping others. Now he urgently needs our help in giving him a new lease on life. He is undergoing chemotherapy at present but needs a bone marrow transplant to sustain beyond the next few months.

Another friend of ours, Vinay, was also diagnosed with AML and requires a transplant. We have joined forces with Team Vinay ( helpvinay.org ) in order to get South Asians registered in the bone marrow registry. Both Sameer and Vinay need a match from another South Asian, however, very few South Asians are actually in the registry and this makes it difficult for doctors to find them a match. This is why we need your help. We have a family friend in our community who needs our help. His name Vinay Chakravarthy. Vinnie was diagnosed with leukemia last November and went through chemo. Unfortunately, he has recently taken a turn for the worse. The only way to beat this is with a bone marrow transplant. The doctors have given him only six weeks to find a match. Let me tell you a little bit about Vinnie. He went to Berkeley and completed medical school two years ago. He was in the middle of residency in Boston when he was diagnosed. Vinnie and Rashmi, his wife, will be celebrating their second wedding anniversary this July. You may not know him personally, but you do know someone just like him. Please do something to help this family and get on the donor list.

This is where you can help.

Fortunately, you can help. Let?s use the power of the net to save a life?something that couldn?t be done years ago, but is now possible. Getting registered is quick and requires a simple cheek swab (2 minutes of your time) and filling out some forms (5 minutes of your time). Registering and even donating if you're ever selected is VERY simple. Only 6 million people of Asian descent are on the national registry for bone marrow donation at the moment, with less than 1% of that amount being South Asian. There's only a 25% likelihood he'll match with someone within the family. Most of them have already been ruled out as a match. I'm told he can find a match with anybody of Asian descent. The testing process couldn't be simpler; it's a cotton swab in the mouth and 45 seconds later, you can find out if you are a match for Vinnie. Mention his name when getting tested. You can contact your local Blood Source or hospital to find out where to get tested. Please visit www.marrow.org

Thank you and please forward this to as many people who you think can help.

Submissions Call - Illume Magazine www.illumemedia.org | www.facebook.com

Illume Magazine is an independent media publication that aims to connect to the peoples of America and to the global electronic community in an effort to present the beauty of Islam through web and print media. In recent years, Islam has seen an increase in attention from the mainstream media, but this attention generally presents a distorted image of Islam, which avoids addressing critical issues. The mainstream media is flooded with misinformation regarding Islam, and this is largely due to ignorance. However, the reality of the situation is that a large body of informed perspectives exists outside the mainstream. Illume seeks to act as an alternative media outlet for these perspectives. We are looking for submissions for our Post 9/11 and Islamophobia Issues. Please refer to our Submissions Guideline before sending your articles.

Send a Tenderloin Muslim kid to Great America

Salaams,

For the last two years, donors and volunteers in the Bay Area have made it possible for Muslim children living in the Tenderloin in San Francisco to attend ?Muslim Unity Day? at Great America, the daylong event at the Santa Clara amusement park. It's that time of year again! The third annual event is scheduled for August 11, 2007, and we need your help to sponsor kids who couldn't otherwise afford to go. See www.muslimunity.us for more on the event.

We need two things:

1) Sponsors: it costs $27 to sponsor one child to defray ticket costs. We want to be able to sponsor at least 30 kids.
2) Drivers: we need 4 to 5 responsible drivers with cars who can transport kids from the Tenderloin to Great America and back on August 11.

If you can sponsor a child, please write a check for $27 or more to ?Zawaya? and send it by July 31, 2007 to Attn: Nabila Mango, Hyde Street Community Services, 134 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, CA 94102. Please also send an e-mail to Sohela Shah ASAP at [email protected] to let her know how many kids you?re sponsoring.

If you can drive that day, please contact Sohela Shah at [email protected] as soon as possible to let her know.

Shirin
