Vigil hosted by Muslim domestic violence prevention groups. A Tuesday night vigil in Fremont seeking to break through the stigma and secrecy many in the Islamic culture have about family problems and mental illness has been changed to Dec. 7 to accommodate a larger audience, organizers said. The vigil will be co-hosted by Safety Education Mutual Awareness and Hope, and Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments, both in Fremont. The other co-sponsors are the Afghan Coalition in Fremont and Narika, a Berkeley-based domestic violence group that serves South Asians. Also, leaders from the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused, a South Bay-based domestic violence family support organization, ask that anyone in need of support to call their hotline at 1-888-ASK-NISA. In addition, SEMAH co-founder Reshma Yunus will hold what could become an ongoing dialogue series -- to which Muslim men are particularly invited -- on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Afghan Coalition, 39155 Liberty St., Suite D-400, in Fremont. Farid Younos and Khalid Siddiqi, two well-known Muslim community activists and specialists in family counseling, are scheduled to speak.

The event concluded with a fine dinner in the newly renovated MCA Banquet Hall. The proceeds from the dinner went to support NISA (ISNA's Domestic Violence Prevention Program).

Road to Guantanamo answers just this question. The true account of what happens when prisoners' rights are ignored, this is the critically acclaimed film about the unlawful detainment and torture of three innocent British citizens in the American prison at Guantanamo Bay. Come enjoy the movie and discussion about prisoners' rights, international human rights and whether or not the cost of safety has to be our freedom. Introduced by David Cohen, director of the Berkeley War Crimes Center. Also speaking will be Nafees Hamid, who played one of the detainees in the theater docu-drama "Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom" which performed in London's West End and eventually inside Capital Hill. The play was entirely non-fictional with the script being written from testimonials and letters of the detainees and their families. Nafees has spoken with many of the family members, as well as lawyers and Michael Ratner, the head of the organization representing Guantanamo detainees. He will be available to answer questions following the movie. ASUC-sponsored, wheelchair accessible. Food will be provided!
Event Summary: Approximately 50 people came to attend this screening. It showed the realities of this war on terrorism as it applied to 3 British Citizens and the lack of due process available to them and others to either prove their innocence or guilt and even more importantly to regain and put whatever remained of their entire family's shattered lives back together again.

WHY I STARTED THIS & IDEAS FOR THE FUTURE
* - There are many great events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without knowing that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.
* - I've chosen to present SOME events and hope to share them with you in case you might find them of interest. My ultimate preference would be for one or all of the community websites listed above to take over and improve the ability to track these events so that there can be one location for upcoming events. Everything is a work in progress, so I do hope you enjoy receiving this e-mail on a weekly basis. If you do not, I will not be offended if you ask me to remove your from this private list. Please reply back and your name will be taken off the list.
* - 130 = Current Members - This list originated for my small circle of friends/acquaintances. It is now growing ~2 people/week. The list has now been fully navigated over to a Yahoogroup. All right ladies and gentlemen, I've been getting some good feedback on this list. Thank you to all the supporters and people that send in unique and interesting events. I now want to ask for your help. Some people would be more comfortable attending these events if they know that someone else with common interests will also be there. If you are one of those people and you see an event or gathering that you are interested in attending, please take the information and create an evite and use the special evite code at the end of this e-mail to invite everyone on AtifsList or whatever other Yahoogroup you wish to invite. It is nice to run into familiar faces and makes it easier to catch up with others if you know in advance that others will be there. Of course, it can also be used as a way of meeting new faces as well.
What do you say?
One way to invite group members to an event or activity is by using an Evite. Go to www.evite.com and click on "Create an Evite". The important thing is how yo enter the address from the group. DO NOT just enter [email protected], or else the Evite will think you are inviting an individual and only let one person RSVP. Only those who respond to attend would have their names displayed, thus better ensuring everyone else's privacy. Instead, enter the address exactly like this:

Vigil hosted by Muslim domestic violence prevention groups. A Tuesday night vigil in Fremont seeking to break through the stigma and secrecy many in the Islamic culture have about family problems and mental illness has been changed to Dec. 7 to accommodate a larger audience, organizers said. The vigil will be co-hosted by Safety Education Mutual Awareness and Hope, and Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments, both in Fremont. The other co-sponsors are the Afghan Coalition in Fremont and Narika, a Berkeley-based domestic violence group that serves South Asians. Also, leaders from the North American Islamic Shelter for the Abused, a South Bay-based domestic violence family support organization, ask that anyone in need of support to call their hotline at 1-888-ASK-NISA. In addition, SEMAH co-founder Reshma Yunus will hold what could become an ongoing dialogue series -- to which Muslim men are particularly invited -- on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Afghan Coalition, 39155 Liberty St., Suite D-400, in Fremont. Road to Guantanamo answers just this question. The true account of what happens when prisoners' rights are ignored, this is the critically acclaimed film about the unlawful detainment and torture of three innocent British citizens in the American prison at Guantanamo Bay. Come enjoy the movie and discussion about prisoners' rights, international human rights and whether or not the cost of safety has to be our freedom. Introduced by David Cohen, director of the Berkeley War Crimes Center. Also speaking will be Nafees Hamid, who played one of the detainees in the theater docu-drama "Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom" which performed in London's West End and eventually inside Capital Hill. The play was entirely non-fictional with the script being written from testimonials and letters of the detainees and their families. Nafees has spoken with many of the family members, as well as lawyers and Michael Ratner, the head of the organization representing Guantanamo detainees. He will be available to answer questions following the movie. ASUC-sponsored, wheelchair accessible. Food will be provided!
Event Summary: Approximately 50 people came to attend this screening. It showed the realities of this war on terrorism as it applied to 3 British Citizens and the lack of due process available to them and others to either prove their innocence or guilt and even more importantly to regain and put whatever remained of their entire family's shattered lives back together again.

* - There are many great events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without knowing that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.

My ultimate preference would be for one or all of the community websites listed above to take over and improve the ability to track these events so that there can be one location for upcoming events. If you are one of those people and you see an event or gathering that you are interested in attending, please take the information and create an evite and use the special evite code at the end of this e-mail to invite everyone on AtifsList or whatever other Yahoogroup you wish to invite. It is nice to run into familiar faces and makes it easier to catch up with others if you know in advance that others will be there. Of course, it can also be used as a way of meeting new faces as well.
