CAIR is asking members of the American Muslim community to contact local postmasters and request that they stock the stamp commemorating Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha when it is re-issued on October 6, 2006, as part of the "Holiday Series." In past years, there have been reports that the Eid stamp was unavailable in some post offices. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. CONTACT your local postmaster TODAY to request that he or she stock the "Eid stamp." 2. BUY AND USE Eid stamps for all your mailing needs. Post offices may be located and stamps may be ordered after October 6th through the United States Postal Service website. Eid stamps may also be ordered by calling 1-800-STAMP-24 on October 6, 2006.

Community Empowerment Workshop #8 - Increasing Community Awareness & Activism in the Bay Area ? On Saturday, November 18, the Council on American Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area Chapter (CAIR-SFBA) will hold its 8th Community Empowerment Workshop (CEW), at the Muslim Community Association (MCA) in Santa Clara. The workshops are part of an educational initiative conducted by CAIR-SFBA, in collaboration with the Bay Area Association of Muslim Lawyers (BAAML) and Catholic Charities, aimed at engaging the community in civic, social and political activism. Guest speakers at the 8th CEW will include BAAML representatives Marwa Elzankaly, who will address issues regarding the FBI, searches and warrants, and Shah Peerally, who will inform the community on immigrant rights. Also speaking will be Robert Yabes from Catholic Charities, who will brief the community on available immigrant resources. Finally, CAIR-SFBA staff will discuss the status of civil rights in America, their effect on the Muslim community, and the resources CAIR has to offer.

As some of you know - SAALT (South Asian American Leaders for Tomorrow) is a Washington D.C. based advocacy organization for South Asian civic and political participation in the US. The meeting will be an informal, yet informative one. A "Bay Area Working Group" was formed following that, consisting of a subset of people that attended the meeting, in order to strategize on what could be done collectively in the Bay Area, above and beyond what was already being done via existing efforts. Event Summary: Hikers from Sunnyvale, Fremont, Oakland, Berkeley and Danville convened at Atif's apartment in Danville that slightly chilly morning. Once all attendees arrived, the carpool to Mt. Diablo began. Cars were parked and the hike began...in the wrong direction. After some creative interpretation of the maps provided, we were soon on our way to the peak. The chilly morning gave way to a beautiful day that offered views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. New acquantances were made and the hike concluded with friendly goodbyes to everyone that survived.

Why I Started This:
* - There are many great events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without knowing that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.
* - I've chosen to present SOME events and hope to share them with you in case you might find them of interest. My ultimate preference would be for one or all of the community websites listed above to take over and improve the ability to track these events so that there can be one location for upcoming events. Everything is a work in progress, so I do hope you enjoy receiving this e-mail on a weekly basis. If you do not, I will not be offended if you ask me to remove your from this private list. Please reply back and your name will be taken off the list.
* - 125 = Current Members - This list originated for my small circle of friends/acquaintances. It is now growing ~2 people/week. The list has now been fully navigated over to a Yahoogroup. All right ladies and gentlemen, I've been getting some good feedback on this list. Thank you to all the supporters and people that send in unique and interesting events. I now want to ask for your help. Some people would be more comfortable attending these events if they know that someone else with common interests will also be there. If you are one of those people and you see an event or gathering that you are interested in attending, please take the information and create an evite and use the special evite code at the end of this e-mail to invite everyone on AtifsList or whatever other Yahoogroup you wish to invite. It is nice to run into familiar faces and makes it easier to catch up with others if you know in advance that others will be there. Of course, it can also be used as a way of meeting new faces as well.
What do you say?
One way to invite group members to an event or activity is by using an Evite. Go to www.evite.com and click on "Create an Evite". The important thing is how you enter the address from the group. DO NOT just enter [email protected], or else the Evite will think you are inviting an individual and only let one person RSVP. Only those who respond to attend would have their names displayed, thus better ensuring everyone else's privacy. Instead, enter the address exactly like this:

RESPONDING TO EVITES
When you open an evite, it should say "you're invited" at the top. If it says "AtifsList you're invited" then you know it was sent wrong. All you need to do is fill in your name and e-mail to Reply/RSVP.

Personal Updates
AtifsList might be moving...to Fremont, CA. As some of you may have heard my sister, Rubina, is moving forward to accepting an administrative position at Stanford. We will then need to relocate somewhere in the middle between Palo Alto and my job location of San Ramon. Fremont appears to be leading the options. I'm hoping to live near the 680 side so that I can shoot up to get to my work in San Ramon and perhaps have her go 680/237/101 or 880/Dumbarton to get to Palo Alto. We are looking to rent a minimum 2 BR / 2 BA apartment/home/townhome/condo. Any tips on some good parts of Fremont on that side or some nice houses/complexes? Move-in date is ~12/15/06. In past years, there have been reports that the Eid stamp was unavailable in some post offices. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. CONTACT your local postmaster TODAY to request that he or she stock the "Eid stamp." 2. BUY AND USE Eid stamps for all your mailing needs. Community Empowerment Workshop #8 - Increasing Community Awareness & Activism in the Bay Area ? On Saturday, November 18, the Council on American Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area Chapter (CAIR-SFBA) will hold its 8th Community Empowerment Workshop (CEW), at the Muslim Community Association (MCA) in Santa Clara. The workshops are part of an educational initiative conducted by CAIR-SFBA, in collaboration with the Bay Area Association of Muslim Lawyers (BAAML) and Catholic Charities, aimed at engaging the community in civic, social and political activism. Guest speakers at the 8th CEW will include BAAML representatives Marwa Elzankaly, who will address issues regarding the FBI, searches and warrants, and Shah Peerally, who will inform the community on immigrant rights. Also speaking will be Robert Yabes from Catholic Charities, who will brief the community on available immigrant resources. Finally, CAIR-SFBA staff will discuss the status of civil rights in America, their effect on the Muslim community, and the resources CAIR has to offer.

As some of you know - SAALT (South Asian American Leaders for Tomorrow) is a Washington D.C. based advocacy organization for South Asian civic and political participation in the US. The meeting will be an informal, yet informative one. A "Bay Area Working Group" was formed following that, consisting of a subset of people that attended the meeting, in order to strategize on what could be done collectively in the Bay Area, above and beyond what was already being done via existing efforts. Event Summary: Hikers from Sunnyvale, Fremont, Oakland, Berkeley and Danville convened at Atif's apartment in Danville that slightly chilly morning. Once all attendees arrived, the carpool to Mt. Diablo began. Cars were parked and the hike began...in the wrong direction. After some creative interpretation of the maps provided, we were soon on our way to the peak. The chilly morning gave way to a beautiful day that offered views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. New acquantances were made and the hike concluded with friendly goodbyes to everyone that survived.

Why I Started This:
* - There are many great events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without knowing that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.

* - 125 = Current Members - This list originated for my small circle of friends/acquaintances. It is now growing ~2 people/week. The list has now been fully navigated over to a Yahoogroup. Don't worry, I still manage the list and will only send out a maximum of 7-8 e-mails per MONTH. Weeks ago, I asked for name suggestions for this list. Irfan Rydhan proposed "Atif's List" as a potential title for this e-mail list and Omar Ahmad created and is maintaining www.atifslist.com . This announcement will soon be available on the website as well. Thank you for your support, suggestions & feedback.
Ideas for the Future:
All right ladies and gentlemen, I've been getting some good feedback on this list. Thank you to all the supporters and people that send in unique and interesting events. I now want to ask for your help. Some people would be more comfortable attending these events if they know that someone else with common interests will also be there. If you are one of those people and you see an event or gathering that you are interested in attending, please take the information and create an evite and use the special evite code at the end of this e-mail to invite everyone on AtifsList or whatever other Yahoogroup you wish to invite. It is nice to run into familiar faces and makes it easier to catch up with others if you know in advance that others will be there. Of course, it can also be used as a way of meeting new faces as well.
What do you say?
One way to invite group members to an event or activity is by using an Evite. Go to www.evite.com and click on "Create an Evite". The important thing is how you enter the address from the group. DO NOT just enter [email protected], or else the Evite will think you are inviting an individual and only let one person RSVP. Only those who respond to attend would have their names displayed, thus better ensuring everyone else's privacy. Instead, enter the address exactly like this:

RESPONDING TO EVITES
When you open an evite, it should say "you're invited" at the top. If it says "AtifsList you're invited" then you know it was sent wrong. All you need to do is fill in your name and e-mail to Reply/RSVP.

* - All events will not be for everyone, but there should be a few for someone: singles, families, children, multi-faith, cultural, religious etc. I won't be able to attend all myself, but hope to run into some of you.
* - Event information is subject to change/cancellation. Please direct questions about the events to the contacts listed within each event listing and/or website as I have not personally verified or confirmed the authenticity of any information presented.
* - Most events are open to all.
* - This list will not be all inclusive of all events in the Bay Area, simply the ones that have come across my way that I thought would be of interest.

Personal Updates
AtifsList might be moving...to Fremont, CA. As some of you may have heard my sister, Rubina, is moving forward to accepting an administrative position at Stanford. We will then need to relocate somewhere in the middle between Palo Alto and my job location of San Ramon. Fremont appears to be leading the options. I'm hoping to live near the 680 side so that I can shoot up to get to my work in San Ramon and perhaps have her go 680/237/101 or 880/Dumbarton to get to Palo Alto. We are looking to rent a minimum 2 BR / 2 BA apartment/home/townhome/condo. Any tips on some good parts of Fremont on that side or some nice houses/complexes? Move-in date is ~12/15/06.
