CAIR is asking members of the American Muslim community to contact local postmasters and request that they stock the stamp commemorating Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha when it is re-issued on October 6, 2006, as part of the "Holiday Series." In past years, there have been reports that the Eid stamp was unavailable in some post offices. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. CONTACT your local postmaster TODAY to request that he or she stock the "Eid stamp." 2. BUY AND USE Eid stamps for all your mailing needs. Post offices may be located and stamps may be ordered after October 6th through the United States Postal Service website. Eid stamps may also be ordered by calling 1-800-STAMP-24 on October 6, 2006.

Cousin Hashmat Ansari, who owns Pamir Travel in Fremont, said he's helping pay for the plane tickets."

It was composed by Imam al-Busiri in the 13th century CE in Mamluke Egypt and has been recited ever since throughout Muslim lands from east to west and north to south. Located a few miles outside of Baghdad, Abu Ghraib prison came to international attention in 2004 when reports and photographs of torture and prisoner abuse surfaced in The New Yorker and on the CBS news show 60 Minutes II. These disclosures, along with subsequent revelations of ?extraordinary rendition? of terror suspects to countries that practice torture, the ongoing detention of prisoners without trial at Guantanamo Bay, and persuasive evidence of a network of secret ?black hole? prisons administered by the CIA, have had profound ethical, legal, and political repercussions for the United States in the world at large and for the self-conception of its citizens.
Thinking Humanity After Abu Ghraib is an attempt to come to terms with our government's apparent practices of torture, rendition, abusive treatment, and indefinite detention. In a variety of plenary and panel discussions we will approach these issues from a host of perspectives, including the legal, political, psychological, philosophical, and ethical. Ms. Petzen is a popular lecturer at venues on the East Coast, and has done programs for the Public Broadcasting Service. Before coming to Harvard, she taught courses on Middle Eastern History, Islam and Women?s Studies at Dalhousie University and St. Mary?s University in Nova Scotia, Canada. Rahima Foundation is a non-profit organization that distributes food to the needy in the Silicon Valley. They have a warehouse in Santa Clara and run the distribution on the 3rd Saturday of every month. It's a great and fun way to help out the needy. Even though the work is manual labor, it is very rewarding as the results are very tangible. For example, you actually carry a bag of food to the car of a recipient.

Why Go?: It's Eid! Which one to choose?? Whether anyone admits it or not, the community was already divided with 2-3 Eids every year. Perhaps through time, the ISNA ruling will bring SOME aspects of the community together.
Event Summary: Thousands of Muslims came out to MCA, SBIA, Oakland Zoo, Alameda County Fairgrounds and other local Mosques/Masjids to celebrate Eid. Muslim children, youth and teens had an opportunity to spend an entire day with other Muslims engaging in festivities. At the MCA, their vision for future goals and opportunities were presented to the attendees asking for support in expanding their programs related to education, outreach, social projects and volunteerism.

The San Ramon Valley Islamic Center (SRVIC) is following ISNA in determining the start and end of Ramadan. Dr. Nazeer Ahmed will be delivering the Eid Khutbah and leading the Salat. Salat will be held on the 2nd floor of the Grandstand area of the fairgrounds. Please do allow at least 15 minutes time for parking and walking to the Grandstand from the parking lot. We request that everyone bring their own prayer rugs. After Eid Salat, food will be available so we hope everyone will stay and enjoy Eid with the community. If you have not paid your Fitra, please try to do so in advance so that it can be distributed before Eid. Fitra for Hanafi's is $3.50 and $7.50 for Shafi's. The San Ramon Valley Islamic Center wishes everyone a heartfelt Eid Mubarak.

Why I Started This:
* - There are many great events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without knowing that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.
* - I've chosen to partake in SOME events and hope to share them with you in case you might find them of interest. My ultimate preference would be for one or all of the community websites listed above to take over and improve the ability to track these events so that I too can find one location for upcoming events. Everything is a work in progress, so I do hope you enjoy receiving this e-mail on a weekly basis. If you do not, I will not be offended if you ask me to remove your from this private list. * - 120 = Current Members - This list originated for my small circle of friends/acquaintances. It is now growing ~2 people/week. The list has now been fully navigated over to a Yahoogroup. Ideas for the Future:
* - Many times the thought of attending an event without knowing who or what is going to be happening prevents people from even going. One thought would be that a person interested in attending a particular event would create an individual Evite / Renkoo and send out a private invitation to group members. Only those who respond to attend would have their names displayed, thus better ensuring everyone else's privacy.
One way to invite group members to an event or activity is by using an Evite. Go to www.evite.com and click on "Create an Evite". The important thing is how you enter the address from the group. DO NOT just enter [email protected], or else the Evite will think you are inviting an individual and only let one person RSVP. Instead, enter the address exactly like this:

The festival was established in 1998 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was created with the help of members of the Stanford Film Society as an independent project of the United Nations Association (UNA), a grassroots, community based, nonprofit organization. UNAFF, whose theme for this year is "SPARKS OF HUMANITY", is an international documentary film festival held from October 25-29, 2006 at Stanford University, with pre-screenings in San Francisco on October 18 and 22 and in East Palo Alto on October 20.

Located a few miles outside of Baghdad, Abu Ghraib prison came to international attention in 2004 when reports and photographs of torture and prisoner abuse surfaced in The New Yorker and on the CBS news show 60 Minutes II. These disclosures, along with subsequent revelations of ?extraordinary rendition? of terror suspects to countries that practice torture, the ongoing detention of prisoners without trial at Guantanamo Bay, and persuasive evidence of a network of secret ?black hole? prisons administered by the CIA, have had profound ethical, legal, and political repercussions for the United States in the world at large and for the self-conception of its citizens.
Thinking Humanity After Abu Ghraib is an attempt to come to terms with our government's apparent practices of torture, rendition, abusive treatment, and indefinite detention. In a variety of plenary and panel discussions we will approach these issues from a host of perspectives, including the legal, political, psychological, philosophical, and ethical. Rahima Foundation is a non-profit organization that distributes food to the needy in the Silicon Valley. They have a warehouse in Santa Clara and run the distribution on the 3rd Saturday of every month. It's a great and fun way to help out the needy. Even though the work is manual labor, it is very rewarding as the results are very tangible. For example, you actually carry a bag of food to the car of a recipient.

Why Go?: It's Eid! Which one to choose?? Whether anyone admits it or not, the community was already divided with 2-3 Eids every year. Perhaps through time, the ISNA ruling will bring SOME aspects of the community together.
Event Summary: Thousands of Muslims came out to MCA, SBIA, Oakland Zoo, Alameda County Fairgrounds and other local Mosques/Masjids to celebrate Eid. Muslim children, youth and teens had an opportunity to spend an entire day with other Muslims engaging in festivities. At the MCA, their vision for future goals and opportunities were presented to the attendees asking for support in expanding their programs related to education, outreach, social projects and volunteerism.

The San Ramon Valley Islamic Center (SRVIC) is following ISNA in determining the start and end of Ramadan. Dr. Nazeer Ahmed will be delivering the Eid Khutbah and leading the Salat. Salat will be held on the 2nd floor of the Grandstand area of the fairgrounds. Please do allow at least 15 minutes time for parking and walking to the Grandstand from the parking lot. We request that everyone bring their own prayer rugs. After Eid Salat, food will be available so we hope everyone will stay and enjoy Eid with the community. If you have not paid your Fitra, please try to do so in advance so that it can be distributed before Eid. Fitra for Hanafi's is $3.50 and $7.50 for Shafi's. The San Ramon Valley Islamic Center wishes everyone a heartfelt Eid Mubarak.

Rami Khouri is editor-at-large of the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper, published throughout the Middle East with the International Herald Tribune. ?He is also director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut. Mr. Khouri is currently a visiting fellow with the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University.?Mr. Khouri will speak about the war in Lebanon this summer. He will provide an analysis of the conflict and discuss its fall-out for Lebanese society and government, and its impact on the region's power dynamics.? Why I Started This:
* - There are many great events happening within the confines of our community in the Bay Area but staying on top of them and making time for them can be chore. Additionally, many organizations plan events without knowing that other major events might already have been planned for the same date. Given that both events might be reaching out for the same audience, AtifsList may also be a means for being pro-active with local organizations when it comes to scheduling/planning major events.
* - I've chosen to partake in SOME events and hope to share them with you in case you might find them of interest. My ultimate preference would be for one or all of the community websites listed above to take over and improve the ability to track these events so that I too can find one location for upcoming events. Ideas for the Future:
* - Many times the thought of attending an event without knowing who or what is going to be happening prevents people from even going. One thought would be that a person interested in attending a particular event would create an individual Evite / Renkoo and send out a private invitation to group members. Only those who respond to attend would have their names displayed, thus better ensuring everyone else's privacy.
One way to invite group members to an event or activity is by using an Evite. Go to www.evite.com and click on "Create an Evite". The important thing is how you enter the address from the group. DO NOT just enter [email protected], or else the Evite will think you are inviting an individual and only let one person RSVP. Instead, enter the address exactly like this:
