Islam Awareness Week 2007
Our annual Islam Awareness Week is here once again from March 5 to 9! Check out our daily exhibit which runs throughout the week from 12 to 4 pm in the Bahen Centre lobby. Also, join us at our daily seminars from Monday to Wednesday, and be sure to be a part of our keynote event on Thursday evening. Here's the lowdown:
The Exhibit:
Put your knowledge of Islam to the test by playing our "What do you know about Islam" game, and you could win yourself a prize! Or learn more about Islam by chatting with Muslim students, viewing our displays, and browsing through free materials, while enjoying your hearty $5 lunch. If that's not enough fun for you, have our calligraphist write you a fancy message or have your hand painted by our henna artist.
Where and when is this party happening, you ask? It's at the Bahen Centre lobby, from 12 to 4 pm every day from March 5 to 9. Be sure to stop by and say hello!
The Seminars:
Planning to appear on Jeopardy but worried about that "Islam" category? Wondering what the Quran is all about, or what the Prophet Muhammad stood for? Join us for our free seminars where you can learn, experience, question, and discuss. Don't forget, free refreshments will be served!
What do Muslims Believe in, Anyway? An Introduction to the Islamic Worldview

What is it that makes Islam's belief system unique? Join Shaykh Hamid Slimi as we leave behind the controversies (for the moment) and get back to the basics.
Quranic Cantillation: A Window into the Form and Meaning of the Quran
Tuesday, March 6, 4 pm
Bahen Centre, room 1180
Here's a chance to experience the form of the Quran through it's recitation in Arabic, without missing out on it's message. Witness experienced reciters beautifully recite passages from the Quran, while a translation of the passages they recite is projected on a screen so you can follow along.
Wisdoms of the Prophet: Muhammad's Teachings on Humility, Simplicity, and the Self

What was the Prophet Muhammad's spiritual message? Here's a glimpse of some of his teachings about how we ought to understand ourselves and our place in the world.

Lecture will be followed by a reception
Join the MSA and Victoria University to hear Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah discuss the place of Islam in today's global village. Can Islam co-exist with the variety of existing religious ideologies, or is there a struggle between them as they compete for power and dominance?
Dr. Umar F. Abd-Allah is chairman and scholar-in-residence of the Nawawi Foundation, a not-for-profit educational organization based in Chicago. He gained his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago in 1978, and has taught Arabic and Islamic Studies in Spain and in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He currently teaches in the Chicago area.
