Type 1 Diabetes soars amongst Youngsters
The number of Children under 5 years old, with the condition increased five-fold - meaning it affected one child in every 1,000 by 2004, a study around Oxford found.
Other studies have revealed similar rises, suggesting the trend is true for the whole of the UK, Diabetes UK said.
# Type 1 diabetes, also referred to insulin-dependent diabetes, generally develops in childhood and often runs in families.
# In contrast, the far more common Type 2 diabetes tends to develop later in life and is largely linked to lifestyle factors such as obesity.
Of the estimated more than 2 million people with diabetes in the UK, around 250,000 have Type 1.
Researcher Pr Polly Bingley said:
"It must be due to changes in our environment "
