Turning Our Mosques / Supplementary Schools Into Centres of Excellence
I've recently been given the opportunity of being invloved in a project that helps mosques and supplementary schools that are attached to them to improve so they have policies in place and staff trained to help the people that use their facilities in the most optimum way.
As mosques are not govermnent funded (at least in the UK anyway ) and therefore don't necessarily have to comply with legislation that other public service providers do, the commitee members that run them can sometimes neglect certain aspects of the service that could / should be provided. There is a feeling amongst our generation of muslims that certain policies should be put in place and specific areas tackled to help mosques become the central hub for muslims that use it and provide a service that other faiths can look up to.
At the moment the following areas are being looked at:
-Needs analysis for mosques and supplementary schools
-Health and Safety Policies
-First aid Training
-Child protection polices
-Criminal Records Bureau checks for staff working with children
-Continued Professional Development programme for staff
-Behaviour policies
-Resources / materials used to teach youngsters.
-Teaching and learning styles
-Parents, children and teacher focus groups to aid holistic / intergrative learning and determine level of understanding of needs.
What would you like to see changed or improved? If you were to set up an advice consultancy service that helps and advises mosques to improve and progress what would you advise them on? The thing I said right before that was:
"As for self control, we go back to the old adage: locks keep the honest people out. People who are going to do wrong will do it no matter where they are, whereas good people will do the right thing in the absence of temptation."
I have never attended a mosque school, but I can't imagine that it would be a place where temptation is running rampant. Plus, this man, unlike a priest, is able to marry, so he should not be repressing any sexual urges in the same way that a priest would. He seems to lack motive and opportunity and yet has been found guilty of this crime. Nothing is impossible, but I naively thought this to be improbable.

Who are the staff of the mosque? Back in Egypt, there was a blind imam and a caretaker for the mosque on my corner but I think that they were just volunteers. Are the people at your mosques paid? If they are, are they not subject to the laws in place for workplaces? And, heaven forbid, have you had "Catholic priest" types of incidents that are leading you to believe that those protections are necessary?
