The Rising Cost of Muslim Marriage
The current issue of Islamic Horizons highlights the issue of escalating wedding prices for Muslims in North America. Weddings are reported to cost up to $75,000, while the U.S. average is $27,852. And while culture dictates some of it, much of the extravagance appears to come from having attended other functions and wanting even better for one's own children. Thus, the following questions:
- is this trend evident in your part of the world too?
- have weddings costs gone too far?
- what is too much to pay?
- is it worth going into debt for?
- how many people do you invite? How do you decide who attends and who does not?
- how many days should the ceremony(-ies) be?
- where would you have your wedding?
- what would you wear and how often would you change?
- what gifts are expected in your culture, who gives them, and who receives them?
Any other opinions, questions, or general information on the topic are welcome.
