The King who stole my heart

The King who stole my heart
sent a message with a butterfly.
It said, "I am yours"
and a hundred candles
burst into flame.

translated by Maryam Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin
in Rumi: Gardens of the Beloved

The thought of a butterfly - like fleeting thee..
a mere idea are you, or are you more to me?
Like the King - Al Malik - who steals my heart,
tells me, that in all things, it is Him I see.

What then can one do, if not to be free,
from the end of darkness, that would cease to be..
if we merely allowed the noor that is within,
to shine forth, like torches, not candles merely..
