The competition Kiks off as du, the UAE 2nd telecom provider introduces its packages and offers.
Du chief executive Osman Sultan said he expected a strong response from etisalat following the launch of his company?s packages and introductory offers yesterday.
?This is the great gift of competition to the UAE market. It?s great news for consumers,? Sultan said.
?I wouldn?t be doing my job if I didn?t take the competition seriously and develop a strong competition dynamic.
?Competition will allow ways of having more value for money on pricing. If you are a monopoly you are maybe less inclined to do so.? There will initially be no change in text message prices, with both operators charging 18 fils for a domestic SMS and 60 fils for those to international numbers.
However, from June 1, du will charge 30 and 90 fils for national and international messages, respectively.
Du post-paid SIM cards will cost Dh155, compared to etisalat?s Dh165.
Du users can nominate two national and two international numbers for a 10 per cent discount on its Me and Mine service, while for consumers who confirm pre-booked numbers the reduction will be 20 per cent until the end of the year.
?This provision will allow customers to make more calls for less cost and gain more talk time. Pay by the second will be available on all national and international voice and video calls that are made from the UAE,? Sultan said.
Pre-paid customers can also make two national calls up to a minute long, even when they have run out of credit.
Du mobile services will be available in 85 per cent of the UAE?s populated areas, while the remaining 15 per cent will be served via a roaming agreement with etisalat.
Sultan said there will be areas in Sharjah and Dubai with no du coverage.
?We are launching our network without any site sharing with etisalat.We had hoped we would have this.
?There have been difficul ties in getting some sites. There are some places with areas where people will experience dropped calls. We have deliberately taken an open position. There is not a network in the world that does not have a single dropped call,? Sultan added.
The business packages will offer users a 10 per cent discount to all calls to a specified foreign country, for example the United Kingdom or India.This will be free to postpaid customers, while pay as you go business users will be charged Dh20 per month.
All corporate customers will also receive a 25 per cent discount on calls to its other du mobile numbers.
Du customers will be able to pay for services via their mobile phone, while the company is finalising deals with leading UAE banks to process du bills at their branches.
Du will offer 171 international roaming destinations. and the customers will be able to watch up to 20 channels via mobile TV.
