Syria Supports Arab League?s Role in Lebanon

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Thursday described talks held with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Vice President Farouk al-Shara?a and Foreign Minister Walid Moallem as important and positive.
"During the Meetings, we saw Syrian support to the role assumed by the Arab League, particularly in Lebanon to reach a consensus President," Moussa told reporters.
He added that work during the current stage concentrates on ending the Lebanese crisis and electing a president by the Lebanese Parliament on constitutional time, referring to the need for all Lebanese to have agreement on the next president.
Moussa said that "the Arabs are following the situation in Lebanon with big attention to end this crisis which affects stability in the region in general."
He noted that his talks in Damascus also covered developments of situation on the Palestinian arena, Arab ?Israeli conflict, Iraqi situation, and Annapolis meeting.

As for the next Arab summit due in Damascus, Moussa said that he discussed this issue with Syrian officials and the summit will be held on time in Damascus in March, adding that work is underway to hold this summit.
Moussa called for holding an extraordinary meeting at the Arab League Headquarters in Cairo on the level of foreign ministers to review the Arab situation as a whole and issues related to Annapolis meeting to adopt an Arab unified stance in this regard.
The Arab League Secretary General who arrived in Damascus on Wednesday said that he does not intend to visit Lebanon in the meantime.
