Syria: Saniora "spiteful"; echoes Lebanon's enemies


Syria delivered a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Thursday and launched an unprecedented attack on the head of the Lebanese unconstitutional government Fouad Saniora, describing him as a "spiteful being who reiterates the positions of Lebanon's enemies." The Syrian letter also lashed out at "some Lebanese senior officials who have been inciting the international organization to cooperate with the "leaders of some militias who have spilled Lebanese blood."

The letter pointed to the blatant foreign interference by "a major international force that has done nothing but widening the gap between the Lebanese." It said this pauses immediate danger to Lebanon's security and stability, as this "force" is taking sides with one party against another. "This is often accompanied with delusive propaganda campaigns to put the blame on some Lebanese sides as well as on Syria, every time they fail to impose their suspicious trends on Lebanon," the letter said.

The Lebanese Prime Minister had identified the nationalities of some of these terrorists but did not dare to determine the nationalities of the other group which forms the majority of the Fatah al-Islam terrorists, for reasons everyone knows," the letter said.

The Lebanese PM knows better than anyone else that Syria had generously supplied the Lebanese army with what it needs to encounter Fatah al-Islam terrorists in Nahr al-Bared and had closed its border with northern Lebanon to back Lebanese army military operations. Contrary to the contents of that letter, Syria has stressed Fatah al-Islam is a terrorist organization and Syria's enemy as much as it is Lebanon's enemy," Syria's letter to the UN said.

The Syrian letter dismissed as absurd the circumstances stated in Saniora's letter over the release of Fatah al-Islam leader, Shaker el-Absy, from Syrian jails. "These accusations are not worth a response. It is well known that Syrian security forces has on many occasions clashed with members of this organization and succeeded in killing a number of them, including the organization's number two (Mohammad Tayoura) near the Syria ? Iraq border, when the Nahr al-Bared clashes broke out.

It added: "As Syria expressed preparedness to help the brothers in Lebanon fill the gap between them and underlined the necessity to have the best bilateral ties on all levels, it noticed unfortunately, that some Lebanese have taken extreme positions, with a well known foreign support, which do not serve establishing such ties. Some of these officials have exploited their visit to the United Nations recently to distort Syria's image and incite the Security Council against it. Others have sent letters to the UN which do not indicate any desire whatsoever to establish normal ties between the two countries."

"Spite has caused the Lebanese Prime Minister to accuse Syria, in his most recent letter to the UN, of supporting the terrorists of Fatah al-Islam in a desperate endeavor to cover up for some of those represented in his government, who evidently gave financial and moral support to Fatah al-Islam terrorists.
