Something better than a servant...
Volume 8, Book 75, Number 330:
Narrated 'Ali:
Fatima complained about the blisters on her hand because of using a mill-stone. She went to ask the Prophet for servant, but she did not find him (at home) and had to inform 'Aisha of her need. When he came, 'Aisha informed him about it. Ali added: The Prophet came to us when we had gone to our beds. When I was going to get up, he said, "'Stay in your places," and sat between us, till I felt the coolness of the feet on my chest. The Prophet then said, "Shall I not tell you of a thing which is better for you than a servant? When you (both) go to your beds, say 'Allahu Akbar' thirty-four times, and 'Subhan Allah' thirty-three times, 'Alhamdu 'illah' thirty-three times, for that is better for you than a servant." Ibn Sirin said, "Subhan Allah' (is to be said for) thirty-four times."
We, in this life, want so much to make it easier for us to exist in it; a maid to help us clean or take care of our homes, a babysitter to take care of our children, a TV to pass our times, a car to get us around, a husband (or wife) to help us in our daily lives, a house to live in, children to brighten our days, and the list goes on and on.
On most occasions, Allah in His mercy grants us exactly what we "think" we need but at other times, we feel as though Allah doesn't give us what we need and we wonder what we are doing wrong. We lose patience and ask Allah continuously why He is not listening to us.
This hadith tells us that in our daily lives, when we need something, we should try our best and also turn to Allah and glorify Him and He will send us exactly what we need to make things easier for us. Inshallah.
By reciting these 3 small words glorifying Allah, He turns to us and where some task might have taken us 3 hours to do, He sends some blessing, in one form or another, and helps us to get it done in 1 hour or less. When we feel we can not take on a burden without falling, He supports us in some way to keep us standing. (If we need to visit someone and need to look for parking, He keeps a spot waiting for us!) This is all from Allah's mercy. He provides what we need to fulfill our daily lives in the best manner possible. This is not to say that Allah won't test us and our patience, but Inshallah, He will help us in our endeavours in worldly affairs as well as for the hereafter. Inshallah.
So don't lose patience. Don't lose hope. Don't get frustrated with lifes little idiosyncracies. Follow the example set by our Rasul saws, and notice the differences and be thankful to Allah for everything, big and little.
May Allah be there for all of us and grant His mercy on us all. Ameen.
