Sister Amina Laurie
Sister Amina is a member at my msn group she posted her story there, and thought I'd share it with you.
Asslamaleikum! I am a 36 year old divorced Muslimah revert who reverted to Islam in 2004. I love Islam with ALL of my heart and learned the salats in Arabic ALL on my own. I went through I have been working in the field of collections for the last 12 years and even though I knew it was not a halal job I remained in the job field because of my experiential knowledge/skills in this area. In July 2005, I relocated to New England where I Islamically married a brother and subsequently went through a very painful divorce. My parents who live in the Northeast were very upset about my relocating to New England and marrying a Muslim but I followed "my heart" as I LOVE ISLAM with ALL of my heart and soul and BELIEVED that I would be starting a good Islamic family with the brother but things were not as they seemed and we divorced. I was a broken and shattered person but REMAINED strong in Islam. I DID NOT return to the Northeast to my parents after the divorce as I did not WANT my parents to "lose" the openess to Islam as MY GREATEST wish other than (1) becoming the best Muslimah that I can be and serving Allah and one day my husband should ALlah place such a person in my life but my involved and live in a good Islamic community in the USA, and (2) for my parents to open their heart to ALlah and the truth and accept Islam as I did. I worked for the last seven months in the Midwest in the field of collections for a well-known bank, and even when attending the Masjid the Imam told me that I needed to find another job due to my collecting upon delinquent credit cards. I DID not wear hijab to work, but always prayed salats on time, and attending Jumah prayers at the masjid on Friday but I KNEW that I needed to DO MORE to serve Allah and wear hijab to be an example to others. I returned to the Northeast a few weeks ago with the company I have been working for to make "peace" and closure with my parents which is going well. But I STILL was not at peace until this past Friday when I BEGAN wearing hijab to work and not BEING afraid to admit and demonstrate to Others the freedom and peace the truth of Islam has brought to my life. I had a situation on Friday, June 30th where I contacted one of our past due customers who was 75 years old, widowed, seriously ill, relied on governmental pension once a month to cover his expenses, was in the process of losing his home, his electricity was to be shut off tommorow, Monday due to nonpayment of his utilities. The customer expressed that his life would be better if it "ended". My job was to secure 12 months of payments from the customer which I REFUSED to do, instead I provided the customer with compassion, empathy, and understanding and recommended his contacting social service agencies in the area. The customer was WILLING to pay on the past due account but instead I suggested that he concentrate on his basic necessities. I RESIGNED from my job on Friday, June 30th WITHOUT even having another job as I CANNOT continue to work in a job which is not HALAL. I feel very alone right now as I do not know if I made the right decision and DO NOT KNOW where to go from here. I WANT TO BE AN EXAMPLE of Islam to my parents and therefore have to lead a good Islamic life. Even though I will start from the beginning once again I want so much to live in good Islamic community. I have NOT been active with the Muslim sister community when I was living in the Midwest but focused on my job now I wish to focus on my relationship with Allah and my other Muslim brothers and sisters. I want to wear and live proper Islamic dress and behavior. I submit 110% to Islam now as I was more focused on my career before. I would APPRECIATE if any of you know of a good Islamic community in the Northeast where I can relocate to and find good community as I WANT TO SERVE ALLAH in ALL things and grow in Islam as a good Muslimah. I will be available at the following number until Friday and do not know where to go after Friday: 859-283-1221 Room 237
