Salman Rushdie Knighthood - Worldwide Criticism

Salman Rushdie was among the Queen Elizabeth's honor list released on 16 June 2007.

Rushdie was honored with a knighthood for his services to literature and will from now on, in certain circles, be referred to with the title "Sir".

Having published over a dozen works, Rushdie has received various literary prizes and an equal measure of controversy.

Darya...you're asking good questions. True why not them. Perhaps its time to forward his name to the board of Nobel Prize (in Literature) .

about People attack religion in their piece of writing, lyrics and also in their video...I trully believe they think is the quickest and best way to get notice and achieve fame...what seems to be outrageous, provocative and shocking get wide acclaims.

Just a year after Rushdie's book controversy, in 1989 Madonna did so with her extravangant and highly provocative and controversial video featuring: imagery, cross burning, rape and discrimination... in targetting the christian symbol and faith she succedeed in her video Like a prayer...she shoot off.

Well, he got famous cause he was in the West. Hayat Hirsi Ali would still have been a village refugee from Africa living on wellwafe if not for Dutch government supporting her "cause". Frankly, I started to read Satanic verses few years back, but did not like the writing, so return the book back to the library.

I am wondering why not give honor titles to people like Ahdaf Soueif who writes so honestly, yet respectfully, about Egyptian society...?

I always thought that people who attack religions in their writing a just...plain...they do not have anything else to write about, so they tend to most controversial subject.

drink wine...:( no no
drink juice :) yes yes

JP, j'suis d'accord ave toi.

To be threatened by what someone else says is sign of weakness in one's own certitude. When Haqq al Yaqin is in one's heart (The Truth of Certitude), passed Ilm al Yaqin (The Knowledge of Certitude) and Ain al Yaqin (The Eyes of Certitude), then the Mu'min with the remembrance of Allah in one's heart, absorbed in the contemplation of the Beloved, cannot be swayed by simple words.

Rushdie's title is a very controversial one as is the person. On many occasions, Rushie made public attacks on Islam.

Last night on BBC I heard the debate and the opinions and reactions were clearly divided. Non muslims, christians support his nomination. However, the large majority of muslims is against.
