Asalaamualekum!
So yeah I know, we all get sick of hearing about the importance of research as a medical student, seriously when do you have time? That being said, I'm here to pass the word from some of these research conferences I've been attending.
I think its already obvious that having publications and research experience bulks up your resume for scholarships and matching. But it also opens up doors into different career options if the idea of being in the hospital 24/7 is making your stomach turn :).
I was shocked with the sheer number of physicians that actually see patients only part time. Most will see patients for part of the day, then spend their time plugging into someone else's research project, sitting on advisory boards (grant proposals, journal editors, etc), or work on a project of their own. The spectra is so large! And yeah, you don't have to be an MD/PhD to get there, but you should have some exposure to the laboratory.
So be aware of some research opportunities around your med school. Try to plug into an on-going project and apply to some research fellowships, anything to show that you've had SOME exposure on your resume, it really does make you more competitive for matching (amongst the countless other things :)).

OH yeah, one thing I forgot to add: If you have done some research or have some data you want to put out there (poster or presentation), there's an upcoming MD/PhD student conference in Keystone, CO from July 27-29. Here's the website, registration ending is this week:
