Question for Miss/Mr Manners
certain cultures not only accept but enourage certain behavior that can be considered a social faux pas in other cultures
how does one deal with something that may be offensive to you but considered normal/even flattering to someone else?

how about as romans do...
i have never seen so many conservative hijabuns in one country as i have seen in the desi communities in NJ/Houston/Toronto/ Bay area......
its good but still i dont think thats the correct argument
i was thinking of something less blatant like Gay Marriage...
the simple thing that motivated me to write this JE was - as Muslims/desi - we are not supposed to flaunt our sexuality. where as in the western world the sexier one is its better.
Nice question you have asked here. One thing that we must remember and keep in our minds is that were all from different backgrounds and cultures and therefore we will see many things within other cultures and ways of living that are very different to our own. What i would like to mention here is that when i as a Muslim say 'Culture' i mean the culture and tradition that does not go against any Islamic teaching. Now, as a Muslim, if something in a different culture is offensive to me then primarily it must be against the teachings of Islam, once this can be pointed out then Islam will also give us the answer(s) as to why such a practice/culture is detested along with why it is so. For example, it is becoming a norm to have a 'Gay Marriage' within western states, not only is this becoming the norm but also being allowed according to the law of such states, if the law is not over ruled then such a practice, if kept alive long enough will reach the level of being termed as a 'culture'..So, what do i do if im living in a country that has such laws/cultures that go against what i believe as a Muslim, well, as a Muslim i have to respect other human beings as we all came from Hazrat Adam (Alayhis Salaam), however, this does not mean that i should respect the acts that certain people do and should not mean that i show any likeness for any kind of act/culture which is prohibited by Islamic law. The best policy that i would deem for myself would be to abstain from such people who indulge in such practices, if its my work colleagues who commit such practices or uphold such a culture then my relationship with them would be strictly on a work basis and nothing more than that and, as a Muslim i would at least try to show them the fallacy of their culture or 'behaviour' and do my best to explain why it is not a practical or moral thing to do...Well, thats my bit and what my reply to this question is...

Zafar:)
