Pyaromir Maheboob Khan, June 6, 1887 - 2007
Born 120 years ago, on June 6th, 1887:
Pyaromir Maheboob Khan
was born when his brother Inayat Khan was 5 years of age. He followed this beloved brother his whole life, going where the other went, participating in his travels, being part of ?the Royal Musicians of Hindustan?; and then Maheboob Khan had the tremendous task of taking over the leadership of the Sufi Movement when Hazrat Inayat Khan was no longer there to lead it. How was it possible that this brother of Hazrat Inayat Khan, who was known to be extremely shy and reserved ? no reservation out of coldness, but out of a severe control of the self ? with the sensitiveness of the Indian, who considered music as a sacred art ? how was it possible that this brother led the Sufi Movement for 21 years. It cannot have been an easy job to get along with Westerners who always know better; as it has not been easy for Hazrat Inayat Khan himself.
From 1927-1948 Shaikh-ul-Mashaik Maheboob Khan led the Sufi Movement: dignified and deeply attuned to the Message, and to his elder brother; and in deep connection with Ali Khan and Musharaff Khan. We have some beautiful songs which have been composed by Maheboob Khan; some of them from his Indian heritage, some of them bringing the music of Inayat Khan?s words to life, like Before you judge (this was the last poem that Hazrat Inayat Khan sent to his mureeds), or How shall I thank Thee (written after being freed from German prison during WW2). So many mureeds have listened to the other 2 Companions singing those beautiful songs, which are on CD now. And fortunately we also have some songs sung by Maheboob Khan himself.
