Programming Concerts / Events: Highlighting Muslim talent, catering for and attracting Muslim Audiences
Given the emphasis (well at least here in the UK) on intergration, and community cohesion there is major encouragement from all sorts of professional bodies to help bring out communities and enable them to share their beliefs, culture and heritage with others.
For exampe: Muslims are being invited to meetings where they can influence what is going to be shown in Arts venues within their region so that it caters for their needs. They are also being asked to give advice on how they can be attracted to other events that are going on already. Events that would normally attract a middle class non-muslim audience.
Imagine that in your home town a building was due to be opened in the near future who's remit is to provide a platform for local users of all kinds, alongside performances from national and international performers. This venue has a capacity of 1100, theatre style, i.e. it is a medium sized venue. Part of the vision for this venue is to showcase up and coming talent: performers from all backgrounds that have been established for a year or two and now need a nudge up the professional ladder.
You have been invited to a discussion about programming for Muslim audiences.
What kind of concerts / events do you think should be programmed for muslim audiences?
(a) Are there specific audience sectors that should be looked at?
(b) Are there particular artists that could be considered? if so, which ones?
(c) Who are the promoters and event organisers that the Programming team needs to work with (these can be local, national as well as international)
(d) Which are the major organisations currently organising events on the scale that would suit this venue (e.g. faith-based festival-based events like Eid Melas), and how could one encourage them to consider this venue as a possibility for any suitable events?
(e) How could the Programming Team best send out the message to the relevant parties within the relevant communities that the they would like them to consider this venue for their events?
I've actually just come back from such a meeting. The building www.birmingham.gov.uk is due to open in Birmingham (UK's second largest city). If anybody can help with providing links to contacts to help build partnerships...feel free to share!
Although this is a real situation that is happening in the UK, I wonder if i's worth thinking about the above in the context of your own home towns, and maybe push for a much needed drive for inclusion.
