Playing video games may predict the skill level of your surgeon!!!
Hey guys
I ran across this very interesting and amusing study that I wanted to share with everyone.
The study, published in the Archives of Surgery (February, 2007), found that the surgeons in their study who regularly played video games in the past for greater than 3 hours per week made 37% fewer errors during surgical drills, were 27% faster, and scored 42% better overall than participants who had never played video games. In addition, current video game players made 32% fewer errors, were 24% faster, and scored 26% better overall in the surgical drills than their colleagues who had never played video games before the study.
Bottom line is the skills and coordination required in video games may translate into surgery. Now this was a small study with only 33 participants so we definitely need more trials before jumping to any conclusions. However, the next time you are about to get a surgery, you may want to ask your surgeon about his video game habits :)
