PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The world's fastest-growing democracy, India has the youngest
population on the planet, and a middle class as big as the population of the
entire United States. Its market has the potential to become the world's
largest. While India is celebrating its meteoric rise, it is also
racing against time to bring the benefits of the twenty-first century to the
800 million Indians who live on less than two dollars per day, to find
the sustainable energy to fuel its explosive economic growth, and to
navigate international and domestic politics to ensure India's security
and its status as a global power The urgency of these challenges for
India is spurring innovative solutions, which have the potential to
catapult it to the top of the new world order if India can do what it must
to seize this golden moment.
As part of this special event, "Planet India" author, Mira Kamdar will
facilitate discussion on the concepts presented in her book as well as
the current state of affairs in India.
In order to ensure an interactive format, the program will include a 45
minute Q& A Interactive session following the keynote presentation.

Mira Kamdar, Mira Kamdar, an Associate Fellow of the Asia Society, was
a Senior Fellow at the World Policy Institute from 1992 to 2006.
She founded the Institute's program on Emerging Powers: China, India,
Brazil and South Africa, and was a founding member of the program on
Citizenship & Security. She served as Acting Director in 1996-97.
Kamdar is the author of Planet India: How the Fastest-Growing Democracy
is Transforming America and the World (Scribner 2007). Her critically
acclaimed memoir, Motiba's Tattoos: A Granddaughter's Journey from
America into her Indian Family's Past (Public Affairs 2000;
Plume 2001) was a 2000 Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers
Selection and wont he 2002 Washington Book Award. Kamdar was a core member
of the Pacific Council and the Observer Research Foundation's bilateral
U.S.-India task force, and was one of the principle authors of the task
force's ground-breaking 2005 report India-US Relations: A Vision for
the Future. She is a contributing author to the four-volume
Encyclopedia of India (Thompson Gale 2007), edited by eminent historian of India
Stanley Wolpert, writing the entry on "Contemporary Culture in the
U.S.-India Relationship."

economic impact it is having, and will continue to have, on the United
States and the world. With dozens of interviews of people such as Mukesh
Ambani, head of India's largest company, Reliance; Mira Nair, director
