Olive Trees in Palestine
The olive harvest in Palestine takes place during the last 10 days of October.
Agricultural production is of considerable importance in the Palestinian agricultural economy and all the energies are mobilized during this period. For the past four years, the olive harvest was shadowed by the Israeli policies of repression, closure, blockage of streets, confiscation of agricultural lands, repeated attacks against the Palestinian Farmers by the Israeli army and settlers, and also by the construction of the Apartheid Wall.
Palestine is a country of Olives and the olive tree is an ancient source of basic livelihood and nutrition. It is also a great symbol for the Palestinians.
About 13 million olive trees grow in Palestine on more than 70% of the agricultural lands. The olive tree has also an important value in the local cultural life; with olive oil, soap is manufactured in Nablus and with its wood, famous handicrafts are made in the Bethlehem area.
All of this makes the olive tree the main vein of the Palestinian life and culture.
