i *was* a teaching fellow. teaching is teaching. the job does not change. just like being an artist, or being a doctor.

if you like the field, then it is basically the same everywhere around the world. if you don't like it, you better stay away because vacations are not good enough to keep you hooked. some days are good. some days great. many days are ok. some are miserable.

speaking from experience, i taught in spanish harlem. terrible neighborhood after 6 pm. the parents hate teachers and education. they have no respect for learning. at least that is what i saw.

now i';m in williamsburg, the soon to be all-white neighborhood. awesome school, awesome scheduling. love it, heh.

Depends on where in the city you get sent. Although I happen to feel you'd get sent where they really "need" good teachers. Meaning, the districts no one wants to teach in. The city can be tough. If you're up to the challenge though, it may be worthwhile learning experience. I have never taught in the city (I teach in the suburbs) but I have friends who have. Apparently if you can teach in NYCity, you can teach anywhere! Good luck.

i'd stay away from high schools if i was you...from my experience, it's one of the toughest jobs out there...but then again some people have the knack for it
