CULTURAL ? TIDAL BASIN PERFORMANCES AT CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

As part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, various local, national and international artists will be performing at the Tidal Basin. Here is an opportunity to meet up with other NETSAP-DC members and enjoy this show. Details on where to meet will be sent out to those who respond 2-3 days prior to the show. Performances on April 8 th include the following:

Roomjhoom Nrityalaya ? This dance school will celebrate this beautiful Spring Festival through vibrant, colorful and spectacular blends of Indian classical, semi-classical and folk dances.

Miyako Kyudojo ? This Washington School of Japanese meditation archery and Master bowmaker Kanjuro Shibata XX will give a ceremonial offering in the form of a Resha, which is a display of manners, form, and inner-balance.

Eric Meany ? Washington DC based singer/songwriter brings an always incisive and sometimes humorous point of view to his original songs. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, he brings the audience into his world, entertains them, enlightens them, and sends them happily on their way.

Nrikyashetra ? This School of South Indian Dance will perform Bharatanatyam which has 2 aspects: conveying emotion through facial gestures and hand movements (abhinaya), and footwork keeping to the rhythm of drum syllables.

Hoboyokai ? This group will demonstrate classical Japanese Martial Arts from several traditions.

Don Chapman ? Don Chapman is a Native American acoustic guitarist and vocalist who has performed in previous festivals with October Skies & Chrissy Coughlin.

Fiddle Works Inc ? Thirty talented young fiddlers perform an exciting and up beat program of traditional American and Irish Folk music.

KAHANI NIGHT

If you're an aspiring writer, and you'd like to share your work with the world at large, this is your chance! Kahani, the NetSAP-DC Writing Workshop, would like to invite you to Kahani Night on Thursday, April 12th at 7:30pm at Teaism in Penn Quarter.

There's no cost to submit a work, and admission is free for NetSAP-DC members, and $5 for non-members.

Submission guidelines:
Each author will be allotted a finite amount of time to read his or her work (or the works of others, if they choose). The time slot will vary depending on how many submissions we receive, but assume between 8-15 minutes per person, with a half-hour break for intermission. Works should be original writing, and should not be previously published elsewhere. Other than that, anything goes! Be yourself, be creative, and submit!

NetSAP-DC will not retain rights to any works submitted for Kahani Night, and all rights are retained by the author.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ? Northern Virginia's Most Nutritious Exhibit

Please join us at the fourth annual Canstruction "Northern Virginia's Most Nutritious Exhibit" at Ballston Common Mall, Sunday, April 15th as part of a national community service project of the design and construction industry, organized by the American Institute of Architects Northern Virginia Chapter and Ballston Common Mall. Canstruction is a fun design/build competition that helps feed local residents in need. Volunteers are needed to de-construct, pack, load & unload crates of cans.

On May 5, join us and thousands of other volunteers at nonprofits around the region and help make our community a great place for all who live here! Join us for Servathon 2007, presented by Greater DC Cares and AOL.

Registration Fee: $20 each volunteer to cover supplies, t-shirts, water and snacks. We also ask each volunteer to raise a minimum of $100 (anything you can raise would be appreciated). It's not mandatory but we sure would appreciate your help!

Only for volunteers: "Celebration Party" 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM at Buffalo Billards as a thank you for all your hard work. Free food, beer, soft drinks and prizes for top fundraisers!

Volunteer Tutor Opportunities in Montgomery County

Who we are: Founded in 1963, the Literacy Council of Montgomery County, Maryland is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping adults in Montgomery County learn to speak, read, write and understand English.

What We Do: We train volunteers to tutor one-on-one or with small groups of students who live or work in Montgomery County. LCMC provides Basic Literacy (read and write) and English as a Second Language training programs (read, write and speak).

Tutor Role: Meet with student/students twice a week for one hour. Set your schedule and location with your students allowing total flexibility.

Qualifications: Prospective tutors do not need to have any prior experience in education. You only need to be fluent in English yourself and have the desire to assist an adult to read and write in English.

Training: Start by attending our one and a half-hour orientation during which we will introduce you to our organization and training methodology. Our training workshops are usually spread over two Saturdays and last a total of 12 hours.

Commitment: Six months.

Your Impact: Provide your student/students with skills for life.
