My Dive Class Experience
?Win the war with your gear? was the ticker line by instructor Tom Phillipp which made me more interested in the world of diving. Not to overlook the other objectives of becoming a responsible diver and having fun in the water.
The class included 6 students and two assistant instructors.
We learned to experience new sensations and explore the underwater world through three steps:
1- Classroom sessions: We learned how pressure affects our body in addition to basic SCUBA physics, physiology, and equipment knowledge.
2- Pool sessions (Confined Water): In our company?s heated pool, designed for SCUBA training, I experienced firsthand the new sensation of breathing underwater. We completed 5 pool sessions where we developed SCUBA skills such as how to set up our gear to more advanced skills such as out of air procedures.
Towards the end of the pool sessions we had plenty of air left to experience some fun. We played Frisbee, exchanged our masks, and puffed some bubbles to the surface.
3- Open water dives: We headed out to beautiful La Jolla Shores where we put it all together through a skin dive on May 26 then two ocean dives the following weekend which I will expand upon next:
Our first skin dive was a window to a different world with different colors, and creatures. The morning weather at La Jolla Cove was pleasantly nice. With a ?vis? of 7 feet and water temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit? we couldn?t ask for more. Everyone was hopeful that the diving conditions would hold until we finished. With our dive gear on except our air tank we accompanied the seals into a unique adventure just few feet away from the shore. Tom spotted a lobster and swiftly surfaced with it for a close up view. It was remarkable!
The following weekend, June 2 marked our first ocean dive at La Jolla Shores. After a ?text book? shore entry we dove down to the sandy 15 foot bottom. I saw a small halibut fish roaming around. Wow! This was the first free floating halibut I?ve come across and I really wanted a photo. Sand dollars and star fish were amazingly sprinkled at the bottom ocean. This dive was breathtaking!
At the completion of our last dives in Catalina Island we will be officially PADI certified open water divers! Admittedly, the class sessions weren?t the most exciting part of diving, but the knowledge gained will guide us through years of safely enjoying the adventure of SCUBA!
