It depends on what a person means by assimilating. For me, if a person has to change himself, way of thinking then no, assimilating is not a thing. Personally, I don't understand how a person can not adhere to islamic principles and live in the US or be considered mainstream There are aspects of american culture that muslims try to assimilate into that could well be avoided. I'm sorry, it would not kill a person if a muslim girl wears jilbab and hijab to school or work. It would not kill a person for a muslim man or woman to stay away from drugs, drinking or clubbing. It seems these days, the only way to mainstream into american society is to leave islam and islamic way of life.
