In MOTHERLAND AFGHANISTAN, Afghan American filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi journeys to the heart of this medical tragedy by following her father's return to Afghanistan to battle one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Dr. Qudrat Mojadidi is an OB/GYN who was forced by political pressures to emigrate from Afghanistan to the U.S. in 1972. In 2003, nearly two years after the Taliban's fall, he is invited by the U.S. government to help rehabilitate the largest women?s hospital in the country, Rabia Balkhi, now under U.S. sponsorship with a newly re-named Laura Bush Maternity Ward. He returns to his homeland with great hopes that with U.S. funding, he can help set in motion the large-scale changes necessary to stem the epidemic of maternal mortality in the country.

Yes they do need help and prayer.
My friend says that the the Mojadidis are incredibly generous, warm, humble people. She grew up with the ones in the documentary. They were very involved in the Jacksonville community (He also served as "imam" when they had none in the beginning). He's delivered tons of babies in Jacksonville and trained muslims in medical. Both husband and wife are doctors as well as his brother Asadullah Mojadidi. Others in the family might be as well.

Unfortunately Afghanistan has one of the lowest average human life span (43years), may Allah help all those who are working to improve things in Afg.

Bottom line is that we hope and pray that these people will really go and help these poor afghan women in need. And I wish him all the best and I hope US Will really stand by him and sponsor him in every way and provide with with whatever he need to do whatever he could.

I don't really know who is Qudrat Mojadidi and what is his relation with sibghatullah mojadedi? And it is not my concern either. I wish everyone the best who is trying to help poor Afghans these days.

I have a friend from Florida who sent this to me. Dr. Qudrat Mojadidi (in this documentary) went to Jacksonville (late 70s) and practiced medicine there until going back to Afghanistan recently.

Funny you say mojadedi...there is a huge mojadedi family here in Cali-bay area...matter fact there are so many that all of them dont know each other. They are also the ones that started the Zaytuna institute. The claim that they are decendents of Umar (R). They usually tend to marry amongs eachother and are a super proud family. They also say they are pushtoon but from the many members i have met none really speak pushto.

That's the only Mojadedi family that I know that flew out of the country in 1972, and the followers were fighting the Russians.

There was NEVER a hospital called Rabia Balkhi in Afghanistan. There was a ladies school from grade 8 - 12 called Rabia Balkhi in Kabul in "Carti Char" area to be exact. I actually attended that school. Well there is already conflict with the name?? so I wonder how much the story is correct and really where is the money going??? Well the Mojadidi family was a religious family in Afghanistan and they were on of the 7 groups fighting against Russian. And they came back to claim the power after the collapse of Russian and Najib government. I don't recall they were having any Dr. in their family, unless since 1972 one of the kid has studied abroad.

Changing the name of the hospital in Afghanistan and claiming to help the civilians will not change the fact that Bush and Co have the blood of innocent people on their hands!

It really does make you wonder where all the money is going given that the hospitals are in such a terrible state.
I get the impression all this is just for show and nothing more ....

It is ironic that it is called the Laura Bush maternity ward. I wonder where all the money is going when the hospitals are this horrible.

I hear some of the problems can be easily resolved with basic medical care.
