So I went out to dinner tonight with a friend of mine. I just got my greencard so it was a nice restaurant for a minor celebration a month after the fact. Its a sort of combination tapas bar (although the waiter kept saying "toppers") and asian fusion place. Fairly classy at any rate. The hostess asks if we want to sit at the bar or a table for dinner, we opt for the table in the 3/4 filled restaurant side. What do I see when I round the corner but several tables of nicely dressed people out for dinner and one couple wearing scrubs. Most people are in suits or at least business casual and these two are wearing scrubs, with the hospital IDs still hanging from their breast pockets. I found myself glancing at them all night as they quizzed each other about path with a textbook on the table. In addition to the eyesore they provided, they were almost as loud as soccer hooligans at the end of second period. I could go on in detail over the evening, but I guess the question I wanted to ask is... is this a common occurrence? Have scrubs now been elevated to appropriate dinner attire? I mean grabbing gas and maybe coffee on the way into work is one thing...

Let me know if I've just become a dinosaur and I'll work to contain my irritation next time.

There are such cute scrub tops out nowadays.. I think there should be a runway for it.

yup scrubs at dinner , not classy.

wearing scrubs out of the hospital says either : a. wanna show off your profession or b. most comfortable thing u got and don't care what anyone thinks or c. coming straight from work and taking care of business before going home

OK-- no dinner scrubs--duly noted to Naseebers.
But gotta admit, some people become so "special" that they can look good in almost anything; you're thrilled just to see them-- lime-green or not.

Yep, the icon's fine as long as it isn't out for dinner with me! And you're right, it takes a special person to look good in lime green.

Anyone see the irony of this irritation in this village with this icon? Seriously though, it only bothers me if there is a blatant attempt to convey status. But by the time most of us finish residency/fellowship and wear scrubs, the mystique has rapidly worn off. Now if I see someone wear scrubs, it is a sympathetic understanding that conveys exhaustion, PTSD of callnights/pagers, lack of clean/ironed clothes for afterall who can look their best in lime or vomit green?

I guess the real test would be how your date ended up;)

Oops! I once met a guy for a date who was wearing scrubs, bec the travelling took him too long, and thats what he wears all day anyways!
Hygeine? Umm, I could see the dry cleaning tags still daggling...so cant say if they were autoclaved before he got them dry cleaned. :-(

although Yammy might be on to something, maybe reversible scrubs where one side is business and the other is for being out in public but scorn free (sort of the sartorial equivalent of a mullet)

yeah someone sent me the cintas link a while back, now i don't really wear them anymore since i don't really get my hands that dirty these days

Insp I think all leather anythings would definitely be filling a niche... just not sure if its a scene I'm into;)

That said, I have always kind of wanted black scrubs, but the medicine guys at my place were stuck with the neon green - same colour as the housekeeping staff

maybe you've stumbled onto a new niche here. A line of scrubs that can be worn out or after hours.

well really in cleveland there aren't too many restaurants with bouncers, and when they saw the md id my guess is money talks, but yeah, I wondered why the hostess didn't mention it

ok, Yammy, I might have to give you that one... IF the guy was on an impromptu date with the chance of well you know, I guess as a guy I have to say that's cool... but if he was just out to be out, then my irritation stands

might have been a little drunk, but that's just a guess... actually they probably weren't since they were getting questions right as they quizzed themselves...

as for what they were wearing, its kind of the whole basis for my irritation

who cares what they were wearing but why were they loud??????
