MBA major
Salam Everyone,
I have a BSc in elect. engineering.. and I was wondering what people think will be a good concentration for me to focus on for my MBA? I was thinking Accounting since I would like the opportunity to change careers. What else is out there? Whats the difference between Finance and Accounting?
Oh and does it really matter if you go to a 'good' business school? I live in No Va. so I was thinking George Mason...Anyone thoughts?

Brand name of a school makes a huge difference, in terms of quality of education and career opportunities, when it comes to MBA. So, it is worth one's while to try to get in into a top 15 ranked program. Outside that, the drop off is huge in terms of return on your investment (tuition, lost salary for 2 years, etc.). While getting into a top 15-20 ranked school requires significant effort and planning (a year in advance typically), you'll find it is worth it. The initial salary may differ by as much as order of magnitude with the remaining career track also be different if you have a brand name MBA.
To find out which schools you should consider, you should look at full-time MBA rankings at financialtimes.com, businessweek.com or USAnews.com.
Regarding the major, it should be driven by what you would like to do after an MBA. For example, if you would to do product development, you will most likely major in marketing and general management. Any good business school will give you a well rounded education, but, will also offer concentrations which will cover most post MBA careers.
A good place to start is reading the book
"How To Get Into the Top MBA Programs, 4th Edition" by Richard Montauk as well as reading the MBA forums at businessweek.com.
