Maqbool and Omkara
In these Shakespearian dramas set to Indian contexts, Maqbool came out more powerfully and in line with McBeth then Othello?s version, Omkara.
There could be several reasons for this. One that stands out is that the star-studded cast of Omkara worked against the movie. The actors were left half-utilized. Saif Ali Khan was no where near the evil, conniving, manipulative Iago so crucial for the Othelloan tragedy to take place.
The finesse of Iago to set up the tragedy in the play couldn?t be pulled off on screen.
Another reason could be the attempt to set the play in context of the Bihar election mess. It don?t gel.
While Omkara fails in the placement of the plot, Maqbool succeeds with a fair amount of gusto. The conflicts and struggles for power among the underworld lords aptly captures the struggles of McBeth and the context lends itself to the movie. Furthermore, the movie?s version of the ?bubble bubble, toil and trouble? echoed by the three witches are two crooked cops ? Naseerudin Shah and his fortune-telling partner Om Puri. To place the big-name stars as peripheral, yet crucial characters in the overall tragedy was a cinematic master-stroke by the makers of Maqbool.

Iago, the character Saif was based on, was so freakin devious...as base as they come...but Saif was at times quite likeable...and even innocent up till the point where he's quite hopeful he'll be picked the right hand man for the elections race. perhaps if an older person played Iago's role...
Regardless, it was a must-see movie! Songs rocked!
Maqbool was a fine film, but I think Omkara showed Vishal's growth as a director..i think its one of the finest movies made in indian cinema partly due to Saif's portrayal as the evil tyagi..
At any rate, I can't wait for his third installment..
